Highlights
  • 9WRF+MG Chiang Dao - A 830 am hotel pickup takes us high up into the Northern Thai Jungle, the Chiang Dao Valley. Here we paddle the Mae Ping river through serene forest scapes. The creek like river winds itself through the bamboo jungle and temperate forest presenting us with an intimate view of Northern Thai wilderness.
Away from the beaten path, slow to the earthy rhythm of this river. Undisturbed woods, overgrown banks with fallen trees reaching over and into the river, adhere to apparent chaos of nature and going with the flow. The shade from overhanging trees and cool water provide a unique environment as we navigate the task at hand. Ample bird life and lazy water buffaloes keep us company as we glide through nature.
To complete this wonderful kayak trip we enjoy lunch at a local restaurant or riverside.
Now we tackle the Chiang Dao Cave System. We spend approximately 60 minutes following a local guide through fantastic large caverns with headlamps and flashlights, until joining the main route and into well-lit caverns. This is truly a trip of a lifetime, combining 2 of our favorite past times in unforgettable nature . Beginners in both arts are welcome.

Recommended Operator and Tour - I highly rate this adventure tour operator and this tour. Starting with a well prepared orientation for the day at their office we had a 90 minute drive north. As we are older participants they were attentive to our needs and let us ride in the pickup truck cab. The cave visit was memorable. Cave ecology and the caves history as a Burmese monastery were explained. bats, snakes and spiders pointed out (no danger to us). It is a long walk with some narrow or low or slippery passages. Lunch was very plain. I wish we had been told there is a selection at the restaurant besides Pad Thai. The kayaking portion was also memorable. Good orientation. River never too swift but we still managed to capsize once. Khun Jojo was right there to help, but still I got my phone wet (you are warned). On the way back Khun Jojo kindly took us to a phone repair shop where the phone surgeon declared my phone DOA.

Great fun for all the family - This was our second guided tour during our time in Chiang Mai and another cracker. We were collected by Jen (our very friendly guide) from our hotel in the Old Town and after a good briefing of how to control a single person kayak plus being fitted for our buoyancy jackets we were on our way. The minivan was comfortable with air conditioning and our first stop was the caving at Chiang Dao. We saw loads of bats inside the caves, huntsman spiders and crickets together with some spectacular stalagmites and stalactites. There were some narrow passages to fit through (nothing too claustrophobic) which was part of the fun and Jen provided us with some historical facts on our way. After the caving we were treated to a nice Pad Thai lunch then on to kayaking. This was great fun and well supervised. It was very much at an easy pace and no sign of white water which made the whole experience very relaxed. We kayaked through some beautiful areas, stopped halfway on a sandbank for a cooling swim and break and completed the river section in just over 2 hours. Overall a great tour - big thanks to Jen and his fellow guide for a fun and friendly time 🙏

Excellent - Our guide was amazing. I enjoyed seeing more of the country on the way to the river. The kayaking was peaceful, beautiful and we were able to see beautiful birds. The water was calm and not difficult. The cave was wonderful, others mentioned claustrophobic issues however you can see the cave completely and skip the small tunnel if you are worried. I am so happy we participated in this experience.

Excellent tour worth every penny - Jo-Jo our guide was exceptional - he was fun informative and engaging, in the caves he showed us the different forms of geological formations and made it really interesting. He also held a very large spider and by being so calm allowed us to hold it too which seemed incredible. To me a complete arachnophobe. The kayaking was just right and our guides were bery helpful and involved, I guess some of the comments directed about the young woman on the trip seemed a bit “off” but I genuinely think It was an attempt to be funny not meaning to be offensive. And certainly not something that would lose a star. One point the whole day is quite tiring so note that it says a reasonable level of fitness is required - I went with the England over 50’s international football team. And they snoozed all the way home!😯

Beautiful Scenery full of Surprises - This super exceeded our expectations. The wait in the morning for the kayaking lesson had to have been the only negative but is required. It's over an hour's drive to The Caves. It's beautiful, it is a temple, so ladies do have to cover up. There were a lot of self-exploration opportunities and it's a pretty slippery and dark space with some crawl spaces and neat temple items. Lunch is served after the cave - Pad Thai a short walk outside of the caves. The kayaking launch was only 15 or mins from the lunch spot. The guides did an awesome job with this! We loved the scenery and this was a highlight from our entire trip to Thailand.

Great tour! Nice to get out of the city. Fun kayak ride. :) - The caves were much bigger than expected! Very interesting. The 2 hour kayak ride was very enjoyable. Bring sunscreen! The trip out and back in the van was very comfortable (about 90 mins each way). Great time getting out of the city.

Recommendable tour - I can really recomnend this tour. Our guide was very funny. The cave very interesting and big (we spent there approx. 1 hour). We also enjoyed the river kayaking suitable for beginners as you get a short introduction in advance. The only negative point here was that the group could have been smaller, as we had to make many stops to wait for the others.

It was a FULL day ! Prepare yourself! - This was such an exhaustive (but good exhaustive) trip! The drive was very long to the location but it was a good sized group and well-organized. The cave was a really good experience and I appreciated the organizers having clothes for those who may not have been dressed correctly. Make sure to wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees if you’re a woman! The kayaking was a good time, and definitely a lot longer than most kayaking experiences you’ve been on, so prepare yourself ! It ‘‘twas a full day !
