- Sinharaja Forest Reserve - The Sinharaja Forest Reserve stands as a national park and a biodiversity hotspot within Sri Lanka. It holds global importance and has been recognized as a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
As per the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Sinharaja represents the last remaining section of primary tropical rainforest in the nation. Over 60% of its trees are unique to the region, with several being deemed uncommon.
This untouched hilly rainforest, which is part of the Sri Lanka lowland rain forests ecoregion, escaped the brunt of industrial logging due to its challenging accessibility. It was proclaimed a World Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and later a World Heritage Site in 1988. The name of the reserve means ‘Lion Kingdom.’
Although the reserve spans only 21 km (13 mi) from east to west and up to 7 km (4.3 mi) from north to south, it is a rich repository of native species, encompassing a variety of trees, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
