Highlights
  • 2 P. Phùng Hưng - Welcome to Hanoi, Vietnam. In the morning, we will meet at your hotel/hostel for breakfast. We then walk to Ngoc Son temple to learn about the history of Hanoi and take photographs of the traditional Vietnamese architecture.

Then we walk along the old town. We will visit the iconic Hanoi Train Street, Hanoi Flag tower and through to the Vietnam military museum. After, we will stop in the beautiful Lenin park, for a quick rest before we continue to walk to Van Mieu- the Temple of Literature.

The Temple of Literature was Vietnam’s first university. The complex consists of five separate courtyards, highlighted by the Khue Van Pavilion and eight-two of the steles remain. These are considered the most valuable artifacts at the temple. The Temple of Literature, known as Van Mieu, has honored Vietnam’s intellectual elite for centuries. Originally a university dedicated to Confucius, this historic temple pays homage to the philosopher and the many intellectuals who have contributed to building Vietnam’s scholarly culture.

To finish our day we will have lunch at an antique French style restaurant. We can relax with coffee or tea and admire the ancient French architecture.

Additional Information

The Temple of Literature, alternatively referred to as Van Mieu, was constructed in 1070, during the reign of the Ly dynasty. Initially, it was only accessible to individuals of noble descent. However, in 1442, the institution broadened its admissions to accommodate gifted students nationwide. Emperor Le Thanh Thong, in the 15th century, commissioned the creation of inscriptions in honor of every doctorate recipient. As of today, 82 stelae representing 1,307 laureates are still in place.

Brilliant tour! - I visited Hanoi with two of my friends, and we were so lucky to find Dien. He took us through old town to have some amazing food and coffees in places we never would have found without him. Finally, he took us to the train tracks to have some drinks and watch the trains go past. It’s an experience I’ll never forget, and I was so glad that I came across Dien. A really great guy who felt more like an old friend than a tour guide. I’d recommend him to anyone.
