Pedra da Gávea holds the title of the world’s largest seaside monolith, earning its name due to its resemblance to a ‘gávea,’ a lookout basket situated atop the masts of Portuguese sailing ships. Famously referred to as the emperor’s head, the part of the Rock facing away from the ocean bears a facial contour, leading the indigenous people to name it ‘Metaracanga,’ meaning the adorned head.
