Highlights
  • Western Approaches HQ Museum - The Battle of the Atlantic Experience - Western Approaches HQ is a secret WW2 bunker underneath Liverpool’s City Centre, close to The Town Hall.

Walk through hidden rooms and discover the stories locked in the wartime bunker that protected the tactics and secrets of the British Armed Forces plotting to bulwark the Western Approaches and aid the Allied victory.

Glimpse the documents and tools the forces used to monitor enemy convoys and inform the British government of their findings whilst keeping their intelligence secret from the enemy, including one of only two surviving wartime phones which had a direct connection to the war cabinet in London.

See where commanders and WRNS and WAAF personnel worked every day and night in the Map Room, the nerve centre of the Battle of the Atlantic. Here they monitored convoy routes and vital shipping lines, and pin-pointed enemy locations on a huge map laid across the table; total accuracy was necessary to enable the Royal Navy to contact and destroy the enemy.

The Map Room which was the nerve centre of the bunker has remained exactly how as it was left when the doors were closed on 15 August 1945.

Experience a self guided tour of the museum where you can walk through the corridors, sit at desks, play with typewriters and teleprinter machines, look at the telephone exchange and try on uniforms.

There is also a room at the end of the tour where hot drinks are available at war time prices and there are traditional games to play and a film to watch about life in Liverpool during the war.

What's Included
  • Receive an authentic identity card as your museum pass.
  • Enjoy free return admission for 6 months.
Additional Information

Western Approaches takes you to an unseen, clandestine world that held a significant position and function in a war-stricken Liverpool.

Presently, the bunker shines as a concealed treasure and time vault, preserved just as it was in 1945. A visit to the bunker not only sheds light on the crucial operations executed within its walls but also brings back the tales of the people who served and resided there.

Out of the 300 staff members who worked there at any given time, 80% were women between the ages of 17-22, showing the immense contribution, hard work, and skills they provided along with the functions they performed.

Walk through concealed rooms and uncover the stories stored in the wartime bunker that safeguarded the strategies and secrets of the British Armed Forces planning for the defense of the Western Approaches and support the victory of the Allies.

Although the bunker is a museum, we strongly support visitors to sit at the desks, handle the typewriters and telephones used by the team for an authentically immersive experience.

  • Please note there are steps down into the bunker

Fascinating and full of personal stories - Really fascinating place to visit. There is so much to read about and lots of personal stories of people who worked or were involved in the war effort. There are copies of lots of official documents telegrams, even hand written letters and you can pick them up & read them so you get a real feel for the people behind the stories. Will be visiting again as there's so much to look at. We look at the Liverpool Blitz as part of a school history topic & were able to see how detailed the Luftwaffe maps were of the area, even down to street names & our school! Wrens museum also really interesting and again had lots of interesting details about individuals.

What a Gem of a place! - Loads of info to take in and you get the added bonus of it being a 'touchy feely' experience too that most museums don't allow. We took over an hour and a half at western approaches and not a second wasted - and when you thought it was all over....there was a small yet excellent exhibit dedicated to the wrens! I've worked in Liverpool town for decades and walked past the place hundreds of times - so glad i walked in this time. AA++

Really interesting piece of history - This was so interesting. Learning all about the lives people led in WW2. This is a unique piece of history as the main control room was left exactly as it was the day it was stopped being used. It was a little cold down there so bring a jacket. The pass is valid for a year so will definitely go again.

A unique insight into the Second World War - I am a massive fan of history. My wife is not so much and my kids haven't covered it in school yet, but we all absolutely love this place. The Western Approaches is a brilliant place to visit as not only do you learn about what went on in the the Atlantic during the war, but you are actually walking through the place where they commanded it- not a replica, the actual thing! The staff, who are super friendly and polite, are also dressed up in 1940s outfits/uniforms which adds another dimension to the experience. This was my second time visiting, and I am so pleased to say it is still growing, with more of the Wren museum opened. I really hope it keeps going from strength to strength. I can't recommend this place enough for any history fans or visitors to Liverpool. As a further bonus, not only does the ticket last 12 months, but you also get a free cup of tea or coffee at the end. I can't wait for my next visit!

Interesting insight into the importance of Liverpool during the Battle of Britain - Spent around an hour here unguided. I felt the museum was interesting and focused majorly on the role of the Western HQ in the Battle of Britain, and rightly so. If you are interested in WW2 and are from Liverpool you would find this interesting but if you aren’t you possibly wouldn’t as it holds quite a niche role in the grand scheme of things. Lots of information about individuals as well. I particularly liked the Arctic/Russian focus as I had no idea about this. Some rooms don’t have boards in order to easily find out information and this could be improved. Kids may be hard to entertain here as well. £14.50 for adult entry.
