It was ordered for construction in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, who ruled from 1628 to 1658, as a memorial for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal.
The creation process of the mausoleum finished mainly around 1643, but additional work on various components of the construction persisted for an extra decade. It’s estimated that the complete Taj Mahal complex was finished back in 1653, at a cost that at that time reached approximately 32 million rupees. In today’s currency, this cost would be equated to roughly 52.8 billion rupees or $827 million USD.
Many consider the Taj Mahal as a prime illustration of Mughal architecture and a testament to India’s illustrious past. Every year, an average of 7-8 million tourists pay a visit to the Taj Mahal. In recognition of its grandeur, it was selected as one the New 7 Wonders of the World during the 2000-2007 campaign.
