- Nelson Ghost Town - In the late 1800s, Nelson was extremely remote, with the nearest law enforcement located in Hiko, NV, about 200 miles away. This isolation led to lawlessness in true Wild West fashion, with many prospectors being Civil War deserters and renegade Indians hiding out in the canyons. Over time, the miners formed factions between Northern and Southern sympathizers, leading to more feuding and daily killings. A renegade Indian named “Queho,” reportedly Nevada’s first serial killer, committed his last murder near the Techatticup Mine in 1919. Nelson was rebuilt after 50 years of inactivity, with many buildings restored to resemble the old mining town. Nelson was also the setting for two films starring Kurt Russell: Breakdown (1997) and 3000 Miles to Graceland (2001). Since then, Nelson has become a popular spot for wedding photography, photo shoots, and a historical stop on the way to the Colorado River.
- Eldorado Canyon Mine Tours - The Techatticup Mine Tour lasts one hour and covers 0.25 miles on gravel, all on one level. This is the oldest and richest mine in Southern Nevada, operating from 1861 to 1945. You’ll see the quartz veins from which gold and silver were mined. The name “Techatticup” comes from the Paiute Indian word for hungry, a term often heard by early settlers from the starving Indians inhabiting the Dry Hills.
