Additional Information

Barú is a thriving tourism hub with most beaches under private ownership except for Playa Blanca, the sole public one. As you navigate the island from North to South, you’ll witness picturesque scenes that include the Rosario Islands archipelago. We will then proceed along a dirt road to reach Barú, a quaint, charming town situated at the island’s edge, surrounded by mangroves. This is a town formed through the fusion of enslaved black folk’s traditions and the indigenous population, shaping Barú’s over 300 years of history. Here, you will partake in a blend of ecotourism, history, architecture, gastronomy, art, and culture. You can also enjoy a peaceful beach swim and the relaxing sounds of bird song.

Despite being a single location, Barú offers diverse experiences. One glance at your camera roll will make it look like you visited multiple places; such is the beauty of our precious Barú island.

Amazing insights from true locals, exceeded expectations! - To start I was exceptionally pleased with the easy method to book the trip. Luis and company did fantastic work to answer all of my questions ahead of time explain the insurance and easily pay them. Sophia was our guide, on time, very professional but personal as well. Vehicle was very clean and in great running order. We learned about local history and answered all of our many many questions throughout the day. An excellent breakfast at the family home, very personal feeling, and tasty! Immediately to the boat and we got the history of the canal being built. The boat captain Gabriel is a gem, he spotted all kinds of unique things we wouldn't see otherwise; turtles and Portuguese man-o-war. He snorkeled to get the best time for fish based on his experience and there were many. My only suggestion to improve the trip; swim fins to go along with snorkel. Was the boat ride bumpy yes, but was expected for the windy conditions. Gabriel purposefully navigated to minimize the bumpiness effect, much better than the overcrowded party boats. Off to the private beach area which was beautiful, other tour groups came and went but we had the best selection. Good lunch, chicken is offered as well if you don’t like seafood. We wanted to learn about the history of the small town we were in. Sophia was gracious enough to show us around. A custom walk through the village and then again in Baru let us meet local artisans. She really let us guide what we wanted to do throughout the day. Then we made a special request for an additional day custom tour and they were able to make it just for us to go see and learn about local Cartagena history and sites, including arranging for sunset at Cafe Del Mar. I highly recommend this group they are caring about your experience being exceptional and caring for investing in their local community. Speak up and they will happily help you have a great day Nice job Horses Cartagena keep up the exceptional work!

Above our expectations! - The “Ecotourism, Culture and Sea in Baru” tour has been above our expectations! If you are looking for a day trip from Cartagena and to avoid the usual touristic routes, this is the excursion for you. Valentina is a great guide who takes the time to explain everything about the local culture and nature. The breakfast and lunch offered at Villa Bonga in Baru make the whole experience even better as you will be able to live a moment of more “local life”, including some great seafood. The organization ahead of the excursion is also very efficient with all our questions being answered immediately. We highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in an excursion that combines Colombian culture and nature and that is not a mainstream one.

Great trip to Baru and the Rosario Islands-Great birds, too! - My daughter and I had a delightful day with our guide, Sophia, in Baru and the other Rosario Islands. We arrived in Baru and had a great breakfast with a Baru styled arrepa. After breakfast we boarded a boat for a tour of the beautiful islands. We stopped for a fabulous snorkel in the crystal clear, coral and fish filled waters of the Caribbean. After touring we headed back to Baru to visit the aviary there. The grounds are beautiful and it was really cool to be that close to so many neat birds. A great day.

A must do experience to discover Rosario Islands - Look no further if you want to discover and enjoy the culture, history, fauna, and flora of Rosario Islands. From the smooth communication with Luis to the attentiveness of our driver, guide, and boat captain / snorkeling assistant, this full-day experience was very enjoyable and informative. No doubt we would have barely seen half if we had decided to get there on our own with an overcrowding tourist boat departing from Cartagena. The day was a nice balance of nature discovery and relaxation on a paradisiac beach. Enjoying a breakfast of arepas and fruits and a lunch of fish and coconut rice in a traditional private home on Baru island is an experience we won’t forget.

They played with our LIVES! AVOID!!! - We chose this tour in order to do something different in Cartagena, and it all sounded great based on their reviews. Unfortunately, we were taken out at sea on a day when boats are prohibited from leaving the port due to the bad weather. We saw the road flooded and the high waves from the car which drove us to Baru, but our guide insisted the beach was just 15’ away, and that it was safe. We ended up in a small boat, in very rough sea, fearing for our lives for 30’ until we reached another island. The beach was flooded, windy, and we left after 30’ (during this time our guide Sofia said she was going to feed some stray dogs for 10-15’, she didn’t even appear for the departure time and we had to send someone to look for her. Completely unprofessional and unnecessary to play with our safety like that. The owner reached out to find out what happened, when we requested a refund he stopped replying. He pretended he didn’t know that boats were prohibited from leaving the port, and that they only found out 4 hours earlier. That tells you all you need to know. AVOID!
