A “captive” experience! - A great way to pass a couple of hours. Our guide, Paul, was very knowledgable and entertaining. A way to experience the insides of a prison from a Victorian historical perspective right up to modern times where the prison closed in 2013..

The guided tour is well worth the price - The tour was informative and just the right length. Donna provided the right amount of information without going into too much detail. Thoroughly recommend the guided tour it is well worth the extra cost. On your own you won’t fully appreciate how our prisons operate nor the history.

Excellent Tour - An excellent tour of the prison with Michael and Paul as our guides. Lots of information about prison procedures and life in a prison from historical times upto present day, including develops of the penal system and prisons in general. Would recommend allowing extra time either before or after the guided tour to self explore as there is a lot to see and lots of information panels to read. The tour alone lasts 1.5hrs so allow plenty of time to explore everything.

Definitely Worth the Money - We had read the reviews of Shrewsbury prison and it certainly had a lot to live up to. We decided to go with the guided tour and I’m so glad we did. Mick and Paul were a great team bringing both aspects of prison life from the perspective of the prison guard and the historian. Lots of interesting facts and anecdotes, with plenty of time to go back and explore afterwards while they were still on hand to answer questions. It was well worth the extra money to have the guided tour, and if you are thinking of going don’t forget to visit the prison restaurant, it’s very well priced and served an amazing cream egg brownie today.

Informative, interesting visit - We have just returned from a guided visit to the prison. Our guide Donna was extremely professional, knowledgeable and friendly throughout, happy to answer questions and involving the whole group. We learned the origins of several well known phrases, along with an excellent overview of prison history from construction to closure. We would certainly recommend a visit, although we were quite cold and it would have been helpful to have been warned to wrap up warmly. One other point, we were with a French speaker and a translated guide - just translating the information boards using 'Google Translate' would have helped understanding.
