Horton Plains, also known as Mahaeliya Tenna in Sinhalese, are the expansive plains of Sri Lanka’s central highlands, situated about 30 km from the town of Nuwara Eliya, which is renowned for its cooler climate.
The journey begins at a gate near a small pond, and as you proceed, you’ll come across a resting station before embarking on the 10 km trek. A short climb on a cobblestone path leads to a fork; taking the left path here will make the return trip less strenuous. This route involves hopping or climbing down from boulder to boulder, accompanied by the enchanting sounds of birds and the wind rustling through the trees. Upon reaching World’s End, you’ll encounter the cloud forest and should be prepared for occasional drizzles.
Patience is required to wait for the clouds to clear, revealing a breathtaking view of the valley stretching out for miles below. On a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of the ocean along Sri Lanka’s southern coast.
