Highlights
  • Known as the doorway to the 1000 Islands, Gananoque is globally recognized as one of the most beautiful waterfront towns in Eastern Ontario, relished by locals, tourists, and businesses alike.
  • In Ontario, the islet known as McDonald Island is located not far from White Calf Islands, and near Ynysrag Island.
  • Between Kingston and Gananoque, Ontario, on the St. Lawrence River, lies Howe Island, one of the globally famous 1000 islands.
  • With an actual count of 1864 islands, the 1000 Islands (French: Mille-Îles) are spread across more than 50 miles in the Saint Lawrence River, starting at the northeast tip of Lake Ontario to Kingston, Ontario, straddling the Canadian and U.S. border.

The Canadian islands are part of Ontario province while the U.S. islands belong to the state of New York.

A landmass qualifies as one of the Thousand Islands if it maintains at least one square foot of land above water all year round and sustains a living tree. The islands vary in size from massive landscapes of over 40 square miles to smaller islands hosting single households, or even uninhabited rocky formations. Many of the islands are public property and provide visitors with parks, campgrounds, and rental cottages.

Worth it! - Really enjoyed the whole experience. Great staff and nice calm ride. The views are spectacular. I mean a castle!! The explanations of what you are seeing adds such a great way to experience the whole ride. Personally I learnt some things.

Nice way to see the 1000 Islands. - Fantastic boat tour! Lots of history and great views of everything, including Boldt Castle. The boat had enough space to move around easily and the company caps the number of guests on each tour so you have opportunity to view the sites from different spots on the boat since it's not jam-packed. We all enjoyed the tour.

Loved the castle - Boat definitely needs serious upkeep and updates. Snack bar was not attractive. Lots of flaking paint. Ride was fine, especially the castle.

Lovely expensive cruise - Very nice cruise on the St Laurent river but a bit expensive. Free parking on the spot appreciated. Friendly staff on board.

Nice walk - An hour by boat is just good for a nice walk on the water and seeing the essentials. The cruise is pleasant. Unfortunately we absolutely cannot hear the guide's comments. Be among the first because the bridge outside on the de k does not have many places. Well worth the detour to see these wonderful islands littered with houses.

ill-considered booking - Unfortunately, we were not able to arrive on time to take part in the cruise. We were travelling from another city and there was a problem with our car. As we found out when we contacted the cruise company, we would have had an opportunity to rebook the cruise, if we had booked it through the website of the cruise company, but since we booked it through Tripadvisor, we did not have such an option. So, if you aren't sure, whether you can arrive on time, we would definitely recommed to make a reservation through the cruise company directly.
