The Canadian islands are part of Ontario province while the U.S. islands belong to the state of New York.

A landmass qualifies as one of the Thousand Islands if it maintains at least one square foot of land above water all year round and sustains a living tree. The islands vary in size from massive landscapes of over 40 square miles to smaller islands hosting single households, or even uninhabited rocky formations. Many of the islands are public property and provide visitors with parks, campgrounds, and rental cottages.
