The Absolute Best Portuguese Slave Tour (and Guide) - Rui Fernandes, our private tour guide, exceeded any expectation I may have had for this tour. He was kind, considerate, and exceptionally knowledgeable about the subject matter. As a lifelong student of the American Slave Trade, I had previously begun learning about the Portuguese involvement in the enterprise of the Atlantic Slave Trade. Rui was a literal well of knowledge, information, and compassion. My friends and I spent the rest of our time in Portugal regaling over the information shared by Rui. For anyone interested in this topic, Rui should be your first and only choice for a tour guide. We would have gladly spent an entire day with him, as he was inexhaustible. When I returned home, I realized that I was so absorbed in our discussions, that I never thought to take any pictures. Our tour guide, Rui Fernandes, is exceptional!

Most knowledgeable tour guide ever! - Our tour guide, Rui Fernandes, was amazing! Prior to the tour, he reached out to introduce himself and give us instructions on where to meet him. On the day of the tour he contacted us when he arrived at the meeting spot. It was a rainy day, and he took special care to ensure that he kept us out of the rain as much as possible. He was extremely knowledgeable and explained things throughly. He kept things interesting. He also took the time to answer all of our questions - and we had lots of them. This was our best Portugal tour, and we took several. Since coming home, I have recommended this tour to friends who will be traveling to Lisbon in the near future. I also highly recommend it to anyone reading this review.

Our guide was extremely... - Our guide was extremely well prepared - and totally willing to answer our many questions. Understanding the slave trade through time —and Portugal’s slave trade in that context —was eye opening and added a much deeper dimension to all I saw in Lisbon. I can’t recommend this tour highly enough!!

Highly Recommended Tour! - I am absolutely loved this tour! Yes the subject matter maybe heavy but it was actually quite empowering for me as a black traveler to have the subject matter acknowledged opposed to masked as just the Age of Discovery. I appreciated the opportunity to learn about the impact of the slave trade on Porotgual's development and how Lisbon was marked by slavery. Rui was a very knowledgeable, accommodating and friendly tour guide. The tour was engaging and I liked the way pictures and historical documents were weaved into the tour. I also thought Rui's connection to the tour's subject matter revealed at the end was quite interesting and touching. I would highly recommend Rui's tour for anyone visiting Lisbon. It was well worth it!

Do not miss this Tour - This tour was informative, well pace and a tour to take again! Being Africa Americans we are interested in the history of our ancestors and seek events that address this in all the countries we visit. This is by far the best tour on the subject we have participated outside the US. It is worth attending and put it on the top of your tour list! Do not miss this tour! The only thing that was missing was the opportunity to purchase some reading matter from our tour guide(Riu). He really should put something together(book maybe), because he really did a fantastic job of research and preparation!

Very informative, well-organized, and excellent! - Our experience with Rui Fernandes was excellent! The depth of his research and his ability to impart his knowledge of Portugal’s slave trade history was extremely impressive. His discussion of historical events as we made stops in several Lisbon locations was both informative and thought-provoking, helping our group to see the continuing impacts of this history on current social situations. Rui is clearly passionate about this topic, welcomed our questions, and shared maps and photos to enhance our understanding. I’ve recommended this historical tour to friends and plan to join it again on my next trip to Portugal—there’s so much to learn about a history that’s hidden in plain sight!
