Additional Information

Ever curious about how individuals manage to survive and endure in slums? This walking tour is arranged by Pete For India Travel to back a partner NGO and registered charity called PETE India (Providing Education to Everyone). A vast 80% of the earnings from the tour are directed to support our initiatives. Walkers will be led by a guide through the labyrinth of narrow streets and passageways of a West Delhi slum for a duration of 2 hours. You’ll get a glimpse into the day-to-day life of millions of people residing in Delhi’s slums. During your time in the slum, you’re presented with an opportunity (should you choose to do so) to enjoy authentic local tea with a family and listen to their unique stories of survival and life within the slums. You’ll also visit the 5 Centres supported directly by the tour funds and have a chance to meet the students and teachers. The objective of this tour isn’t to ‘visit’ or propagate poverty as a ‘tourist attraction’, but to foster a cultural exchange allowing locals the seldom experienced chance to interact with foreigners, if they choose to.

A very uplifting and humbling experience - We were concerned that was just morbid fascination on our part, but this was definitely not the case. It was a very uplifting and humbling experience. It is well organised and completely safe. Sunny, our tour guide, was a perfect host and explained the temples and the background to the colony very well, in perfect English. For such a young man, he has our complete admiration for the work he does to support the community. Anyone who gets the opportunity should do this tour, particularly if you are fortunate enough to have Sunny as your guide. Thankyou for one of the best tours we have ever made!

Such an educational experience! - What a wonderful morning! A great way to actually understand the political and social factors surrounding the slums. I really enjoyed my time and got to speak to many local people who gave me their insight on what life in the slum really is like. I left feels very humbled - I joined this tour for education and I can say that I really did learn a lot. Really worth the visit - very non-intrusive also. Lot's of respect for the volunteers and guides thar guve their time to help in these areas.

Unique - highly recommend! - Such a unique and special experience. It was great spending the afternoon with Sunny. The visit to the volunteer led school they’d set up in the slum, and meeting the other volunteer teachers, was a particular highlight. Highly recommend this tour!

This tour is a must do if visiting Delhi! - Our guide, Sunny, was so friendly and knowledgeable as he showed us around his own community and shared about his life living in the Sangam Colony. I was concerned our presence may be intrusive, but felt very welcomed by the residents and the children getting heaps of handshakes and smiles and felt very safe the entire time. An unforgettable experience for all the right reasons!

Absolute highlight of India - This was an absolute highlight of our 2 week Indian trip. We felt safe and comfortable and all the people and happy faces we met was such a joy. I loved the railway walk and the seeing the kids playing cricket on active tracks and the trains going past. Thoroughly recommend this tour and any opportunity to help these amazing humans who live in the communities.

So glad we did it. Highly recommend for those who want to learn rather than tour. - My partner and I went on this tour, to get a deeper understanding of what poverty looks and feels like. This tour allowed us to connect with people who are living a life so incredibly different from ours, and to learn from each other. The tour was pretty different from our expectations, since we were a little unsure at first what it would be like, in the end we were so glad we went. We met the kids that our tour guide, Sunny, tutors as a part of a separate NGO. They had 100 questions for us, about how we live, what inspires us and what education is like in the west. Even got us to dance with them. They were amazing! And Sunny was too. We also saw people using rubbish and cardboard to make recycled items, like pillows or decorations, which they sell at their local market. This tour really put things in perspective for us and gave us the opportunity to see a glimpse of how millions of people live each day. It was honestly the highlight of our trip to Delhi. I couldn't recommend it more.
