Highlights
  • Choeung Ek Genocidal Center - Is the site of a former orchard and mass grave of victims of the Khmer Rouge
  • killed between 1975 and 1979
  • in Dangkao Section, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, about 17 kilometers (11 mi) south of the Phnom Penh city center. It is the best-known of the sites known as the Killing Fields, where the Khmer Rouge regime executed over one million people between 1975 and 1979. Mass graves containing 8,895 bodies were discovered at Choeung Ek after the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime. Many of the dead were former political prisoners who were kept by the Khmer Rouge in their Tuol Sleng detention center and in other Cambodian detention centers. Today, Choeung Ek is a memorial, marked by a Buddhist stupa. The stupa has acrylic glass sides and is filled with more than 9,000 human skulls. Some of the lower levels are opened during the day so that the skulls can be seen directly. Many have been shattered or smashed in. Amazing educational and emotional experience! - This was an incredibly educational and emotional experience! Our guide Baboon shared his personal family’s experience (his mother survived one of the killing field camps) and so many details about the genocide period, very emotional and moving. We also got to meet two of the S-21 survivors and hear them speak, I have no words to describe this.

Heart wrenching but culturally important - Very confronting and emotional but also a very informative and interesting tour . Pulls at the heart strings. Our tour guide Chesda was a lovely lady with a vast knowledge which she shared with us. I would definitely recommend this tour.

Great tour with Mr Visal about the sad history of Cambodia - The tour to the Killing Field and Genocide Museum (S21) was a very informative tour about the sad history of Cambodia. Our tour guide, Mr Visal, did a great job and gave us lots of useful information about the Killing Field and S21 prison already on the way there (about 20 minutes by minivan). Mr Visal is a very competent tour guide and has a deep knowledge of this sad topic. Our group was made of 8 people and Mr Visal always made sure that everybody was following him and waited for the people who were late. He always had an answer to all our questions. I would suggest booking this tour with a tour guide as it is much more personal than the audio guide. Thank you Mr Visal for the great tour, I feel very sad about the horrible things that happened in your Country and can imagine how difficult it must be for you to talk about them. But the world should be aware of the truth; my compassion goes to all innocent victims and especially to the few survivors of the Killing Fields.

Very insightful and memorable - Baboon was very professional and humorous in his approach which helped us to connect with him quickly . A good intro helped us to understand the history, it was not emotionally easy to visit genocide spot and the prison . Thanks to Baboon who made our first trip very insightful and memorable.
