Our top-selling Ice Cave Excursion! This brief journey offers you the chance to explore the awe-inspiring blue caverns of Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier. We take on a trip to one of the easily reachable ice caves, offering a breathtaking encounter with age-old blue ice.

The state of the ice caves is perpetually varying. During the hotter summer period, the ice caves take shape due to the melting glacier waters. Each autumn, we begin our search for ice caves. As a locally-based business, we started hunting for ice caves in the 90’s and our expertise lies in locating the finest ice cave possible.

The Ice Cave Excursion is our hassle-free choice, with our reliable super jeeps bringing us nearly to the cave’s entrance, implying less walking. This tour is suitable for most and is ideal if you have a tight timetable or concerns about winter weather conditions in the Arctic. The super jeep ride to the cave is an adventure in itself. Once we arrive at our destination, there will be enough time for you to explore a stunning blue Ice Cave!

  • Operates in most weather conditions, please dress appropriately. Please come in warm and waterproof clothing and good hiking boots.

A chance to see the amazing forces of nature at work inside a crystal blue glacier. - The Blue Ice Cave was one of the highlights of our Iceland trip. We were staying near Vik and were ready to go on the Katla cave tour with another company but checking recent visitor photos from Katla on Google Maps just didn't look that great. Every photo was the same arch with people standing in the the same spot with a lot of people standing around. We found Local Guides by accident and were intrigued by their very informative explainer on what a blue ice cave is and how it differs from other glacier ice caves. Looking at the recent visitor photos on Google Maps sold us on making the drive to Vatnajokull. It was very much worth it and we enjoyed our local guide Damien along with our small group of trekkers. We had plenty of time to explore the cave, take pictures and discover this amazing place. Thanks Local Guides.

Amazing Experience - We had such an amazing time on the tour. I went with a friend of mine and we had a small group of 6 persons. Which was amazing, all the other groups were more people. Big shout out to our tour guide Magnus, he was such a fun guy and took the time to explain the ice cave in a funny interesting way... Really would recommend to add the tour on your bucketlist on things to do in Iceland!!

Perfect ice cave tour, very professional company! - We had a perfect ice cave tour with Rich. Due to the well organized and timed tour we were the only group in the cave most of the time. Rich wasnt just a calm and experienced guide, who explained a lot about the ice caves and the glacier and gives you a safe feeling all the time, more he is also an excellent photographer. The Local Guides of Vatnajökull is a professional tour company with clear tour descriptions, which is not the standard. Absolute recommendation!

Once in a lifetime - Arnaud was an AMAZING tour guide giving us lots of history and Local Guide was so accommodating. I reached out concerned that the ice caves would make me feel claustrophobic and they gave me many details to ensure I was properly prepared. Arnaud also went the extra mile and explained what each area was like before we ventured forward. Above and beyond!! The tour group was small and the ice caves were a once in a lifetime experience!

Pretty cool experience. - Cool experience. Short walk to the ice cave so anyone can do it. It was a little crowded and I wish there was more of them to see but it's worth it!

Small ice cave and a lot of waiting for other groups to pass through - Had looked forward to this experience but was quite disappointed. The cave itself is very small (would be possible to walk through it in less than 5 minutes easily) but they make you wait at multiple spots, so other groups can pass through before you. This means a lot of standing around and waiting at the entrance and then a short walk through the cave. The ice cave is very beautiful (although a bit dark) and the guide shared some interesting things about the glacier, but out of the 2,5 hour tour most was transport there or waiting for other groups to pass through before us. Considering the price, we did find it underwhelming.
