- Mount Etna - Crater Mouth eruptive 2001 was born at 2.20 on 18 July 2001. An earthquake of magnitude 2.7 was recorded by the INGV seismic surveillance network in the area of Monti Calcarazzi, on the southern slope of the volcano, and almost simultaneously a new eruptive fracture opened with N-S orientation at an altitude of about 2100 m. This fracture had a definable “boutonniere” appearance and produced: 1) Vulcanian explosions at intervals of about 10 minutes with the emission of blackish-brown ash from the northern portions; 2) Strombolian activity in the central portion; 3) emission of lava flows from the southern portion of the fracture. The continuous and rather intense activity led within a few hours (at approximately 2.00 pm local time) the fronts of the lava flows to invade the square of the Sapienza Refuge, interrupting the SP 92. At 8.00 pm local time on 18 July, the front had already reached the altitude of 1800 m towards the south in the direction of Nicolosi.
