Highlights
  • Ile Des Phoques - On the way to Ile Des Phoques you can see albatross, dolphins, Australian fur seals and whales (depending on the time of year) as well as majestic panoramic views of Maria Island and the Freycinet Peninsula.

Once at Ile Des Phoques we will sit with the fur seals and learn about their home at Ile Des Phoques, their recovery from near extinction from commercial sealing and how they are now breeding at Ile Des Phoques again for the first time in over 200 years.

We will enjoy morning tea, coffee and cakes with the seals and then explore the remarkable giant Rainbow Caves. These caves are the largest granite sea caves in Australia, possibly the World. Feel the emotion and beauty of nature as we venture deep inside the caves onboard the cruise boat.

  • Maria Island - After your time spent at Ile Des Phoques, we travel to Maria Island for a beautiful lunch with local wine onboard our cruise boat beside a stunning white sandy beach. After lunch we dock at the jetty and spend the afternoon on Maria Island for a guided walk exploring the history of the Darlington convict settlement and time spent with the resident wombats and kangaroos.

*Note, if poor weather prevents the cruising to the Ile Des Phoques, the cruise will be changed to circumnavigate Maria Island.

Lunch is provided on the tour from our cafe as a large healthy salad bowl. A variety of salad lunch options include; chicken breast in pesto aioli, smoked salmon, roast beef, leg ham or vegetarian/vegan. You can add a home made bacon & cheese quiche or pumpkin and feta quiche and switch to a half salad. You will also be provided a complimentary drink of tea, coffee, juice, soft drinks, local wines and Tasmanian premium larger.

  • Darlington - In the afternoon, both tours will dock at Darlington. The perfect way to compliment your cruise is to stretch your legs and enjoy a guided tour through Darlington’s fascinating collection of preserved convict buildings, learn about the town’s remarkable history and come face to face with Maria Island’s resident wombats. If history is not for you, then simply soak up the sun on Darlington’s white sandy beach or swim/snorkel in the waters of Maria Island’s marine reserve.

Hotel pickup is available for guests staying in Hobart! Why not travel in style with our own comfortable bus instead of hiring a car. Our shuttle bus will take you from Hobart to Triabunna along the picturesque Tasman Highway and if time permits, we will stop into the historic town of Richmond to capture some wonderful souvenir photos. Travel time is 1hr 15min on the bus. Cost for the bus is $25pp return.

Getting to see Maria Is and IIe Des Phogues from the sea was a wonderful experience. - We had a wonderful day out on the cruise with Michael and Rachel. Appreciated the witty and interesting commentary and learning about not only Maria and lle Des Phogues, but also the wildlife that live there. Plus, we had the opportunity to swim at Fossil Cliffs! Cool clear water. A highlight of our trip. Take your bathers and towel.

Fantastic experience, but be wary of conditions! - I want to preface this review by saying up front that this was one of the best tours we took over the course of an extended trip in Australia. The guides were fabulous, the views were breathtaking, and the overall experience was wild. However, I also want to give a caveat to anyone thinking of booking this tour. This is a boat tour in a part of the world with unpredictable weather and swells. We were able to circumnavigate Maria Island, but Ile Des Phoques and the Rainbow Cave were nixed due to conditions, and parts of the tour saw 10 foot swells and high wind speeds in some parts. Our captain handled the conditions with aplomb, and we felt very safe during those times, and the company very generously made up for the conditions and changes in plans, but just be aware these things can happen. With that out of the way, WOW! Maria Island is one of the most gorgeous and photo-worthy places I've ever seen. There were so many fantastic views of the Fossil Cliffs and Painted Cliffs, along with dozens of fascinating nooks and crannies all over the island that were only accessible by boat. It just felt so special seeing all of those places, plus we had an added bonus of seals and really neat sea birds at certain stopping points. As for the island itself, one of our guides affectionately referred to it as "Wombat World" and it was definitely a moment of truth in advertising. Just off the paths on the island, we saw numerous wombats, pademelons, wallabies, and even an echidna! There were also a number of interesting historical facts and structures around the island that added to the tour in really unexpected ways. So, overall, I highly highly highly recommend this tour, but just be aware that circumstances beyond everyone's control can sometimes pop up and cause a change of plans. I can't and won't hold that against anyone, but I think it's worth knowing when you book.

Amazing day out! - The trip was an all round amazing experience! Would recommend to all. The staff were fantastic - informative, knowledgeable and so friendly. The boat was comfortable and clean and lunch was excellent. The seals, dolphins and wombats were all perfectly behaved and posed for many pictures! Would also give an honourable mention to the excellent breakfast toasty we got from the cafe meeting point!

Great day out - This was a great tour. We travelled out to Ile Des Phoques and had morning tea watching the seals swimming around and enjoying the attention. We then travelled through some hidden sea caves which was amazing. This was followed by a delicious lunch and viewing of the Painted Cliffs. We then headed to Maria Island where we saw wombats and pademelons wandering around and were given a history of the island.

Maria Island Magic - We had an amazing day aboard. The weather meant that the seals were ready to frolick near the boat so we got a fantastic view. I was so impressed with the respect Michael and the crew had for the wildlife. The knowledge that the crew had about the island, the history and the geography were exemplary. The crew were so attentive to everyone’s needs. Can’t recommend this company enough.
