Highlights
  • National Museum of Ethiopia - The National Museum of Ethiopia houses the nation’s artistic treasures as well as precious archaeological finds such as the fossilized remains of early hominids, the most famous of which is “Lucy,”. Recently added is a display on Selam, estimated to be 3.3 million years old, considered to be the earliest child.

The museum exhibitions include archaeological, paleoanthropological, objects from ancient and medieval periods, regalia and memorabilia from former rulers, artwork, a collection of secular arts and crafts. The museum tries to give an overview of the cultural richness and variety of the peoples of Ethiopia.Lucy was discovered in 1974 near the village Hadar in the Awash Valley of the Afar Triangle in Ethiopia. The Lucy specimen is an early australopithecine and is dated to about 3.2 million years ago. Professional and amazing service - I went on a week trip around Ethiopia organised solely by Danakil Depression Tours. The company and Mickey had been recommended to me by two mutual contacts. From the very start I had a detailed conversation with Mickey about what I was looking to achieve from the trip, and Alex and Mickey put together a fantastic itinerary for me and helped me at every step of the way, organizing visas and even booking flights. Extremely helpful and from the beginning I was struck by the personal touch that the company manages to achieve. The trip was fantastic and combined history, culture, nature, churches, mosques, hiking, wild animals, amazing food and wonderful people. Alex and Mickey handpicked each local guide (who were all excellent and had detailed local knowledge) and also my driver Bini who was superb. And on each return to Addis I would meet with Mickey who came to my hotel, debriefed me and made sure that the trip was going well and I was happy. I cannot recommend Danakil Depression Tours enough. Utterly professional and gave me such comfort. I'm sure there are various dramas behind a three week trip in Ethiopia but the entire experience was completely seamless and smooth. Thank you so much!

Day Tour during a long layover - I used this company for a day tour through Addis Ababa for a one day layover. They offer pick up services from your hotel and I was dropped off after the tour. I saw a lot and the guide (Mickey) was very knowledgeable. I’d recommend this company to anyone looking to tour Ethiopia.

Addis Abeba city tour experience - I visit Addis with my family, and our hotel recommended us this tour. It was a good decision due that Addis Abeba could be difficult to visit without a tour guide, and they were very professional, very good Spanish guide that had lot of knowledge and we had a great time. I’d definitely recommend them!

Lay over in Addis - Great tour with Danakil Depression Tours. I booked last minute and was not even sure that morning if I should go at all - but glad I did. Booking a public tour, but in the end got a private tour visiting the markets, cathedral, national museum and many more places. I especially liked the Red Terror Museum - did not know about that ugly part of Ethiopian history before. We had nice lamb kebab lunch in an old bathhouse and continued the food tour in the afternoon in select and nice bars and restaurants. Genet all the time had a open ear for my questions and was nice to talk to. Can really recommend this trip

Great day in Addis! - I am widely-travelled and quite demanding when it comes to guided tours, and I can say that Mulate (my tour guide) was one of the best tour guides I have ever had. Not only was he very knowledgeable about everything that was part of the tour, but he was a fantastic source of information and an excellent, sharp-witted conversation partner on any other topic that came up during the half-day tour. Sharp, pleasant, erudite, and good sense of humor. The visit of the National Museum was truly excellent. Our tour happened to be on Good Friday, so the St. George's Cathedral was closed for visits as it was (like all the other churches) celebrating mass and was surrounded by the praying faithful, but Addis still managed to organize a church official to take me through the adjacent cathedral museum. Overall, this was an outstanding experience, and I can warmly recommend Mickey and, by extension, the entire company.
