Highlights
  • Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - At 7:00 am, we will pick you up from your hotel and head straight to Alexandria, where we will spend the next two and a half hours travelling by highway to get to our starting point Kom El Shoqafa’s.
Kom El Shoqafa’s made up of a collection of tombs, statues, and archaeological artefacts associated with the Pharaonic funeral cult, as well as Hellenistic and early Imperial Roman influences. Because of the time period, many of the characteristics of Kom El Shoqafa’s catacombs combine Roman, Greek, and Egyptian cultural points; some statues are Egyptian in style, but wear Roman clothes and hairstyles, while others share a similar style. A circular staircase descends down into the tombs tunneled into the bedrock during the Antonine emperors’ reign. (2nd century AD)From the 2nd to the 4th centuries, the building was used as a burial chamber before being rediscovered in 1900.

Great Tour - Eslam met me at the catacombs to start out the day - he was extremely knowledgeable in the history but also the neighborhood and Alexandria as a whole. We made our way to Pompey’s Pillar after. Eslam balanced a mix of hands on guiding and free wandering time, which I like. Stopped for lunch then hit the citadel on the water (highlight of the day). Last stop was the library of Alexandria. The tour was as stated and did not make any unannounced stops for random sales pitches like some of the other tours in Cairo.

Eslam is a fantastic guide - Eslam was a fantastic tour guide. Very knowledgeable in his explanations and was always willing to answer questions. It is obvious he has a passion for history and sharing it with others. Extremely considerate and let us choose when to have lunch in the schedule and took us to a cafe overlooking the ocean before touring the library. Lunch was fantastic at the fish market (250 pounds for the lunch special) - he helped us order and made sure we had everything we wanted. Private van was nice as well. Driver was polite and offered to stop for bathroom breaks / offered us bottled water.

Great escape from Cairo for the day - The guide Islam and the driver Ahmed were great! Islam was very knowledge and overall very calm presence which was nice from the hustle and bustle of Cairo. Alexandria was a very nice city to see coming from Cairo as the seaside feels like an escape from city life. Islam is flexible and willing to coordinate the schedule such that you do everything you want. We were able to go to the Catacombs, Jewelry museum, Library, castle, and lastly a late lunch on the seaside of Egyptian-Greek food. Overall, this was a very nice trip where we really got a feel for the city of Alexandria thanks to Islam.
