Highlights
  • Materuni Waterfalls - The Kikuletwa Hot Springs are certainly one of the most beautiful places in Tanzania - the hot springs are surrounded by fig and palm trees and winding roots - a real hidden paradise. The crystal clear, turquoise waters invite you for a refreshing swim. Although called a hot spring, water in Kikuletwa is not hot, but rather refreshing since the water source is from the Kilimanjaro mountain itself. Most of the visitors arrive around noon, but we arrive early in the morning when it is still quiet. Therefore, with some luck we will spot the blue monkeys in the tree tops, before they later dissapear in the bush.

This is probably the best place to swim. Emanating from within the earth, the geo-thermally warmed water is constantly renewed and is therefore very fresh and clear and clean. It’s a very pleasant place to spend a couple of hours with family, or to relax before or after a climb or safari. The distance from Arusha to the hot springs is 69km and the journey normally takes around 1 hour 20 minutes, so one should allow at least 5- 6 hours for this excursion.

Additional Information

The Kikuletwa Hot Springs is undoubtedly one of Tanzania’s most astonishing sites - a concealed paradise encircled by fig and palm trees with twisting roots. Its distinctively clear, turquoise waters are a welcoming invitation for a rejuvenating dip. Despite its ‘hot spring’ label, the water in Kikuletwa is pleasantly cool, deriving from Mount Kilimanjaro itself. While most guests come around midday, our visit is scheduled for early morning when it’s calm. With a bit of fortune, we can observe the blue monkeys in the tree canopy before they retreat into the vegetation later.

Highly recommended - The tour included a driver as guide, entrance tickets, a meal, and returning drive. It’s around 12:30-19:00 for me, according to my accommodation area. It took 1.5 h drive, and the guide is very helpful for finding some charging items I need on the road. And tell me everything that I need to know. Everything is well taken care of. It’s really nice.

Some like it hot - It felt like being in an oasis since the surrounding area is desert like. A hot spring it isn’t. More accurately, it’s a lukewarm spring, but the ambience is exotic and relaxing. I enjoyed watching the young people swinging into the water and the mix of tourists and local folk.

Nice day tour to materuni falls, coffee farm and chemka hot springs. - This was a very memorable trip. In one day it covered Materuni falls, coffee farm tour, and chemka hot springs. The tour guide Essam was excellent, giving me personal attention and explaining so many things along the way. Coffee tour showed the Chagga village people showed the whole process of making coffee and afterwards the coffee tasted really good. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting this area.

Relaxing swim! - We really enjoyed our trip! We arrived in the morning which was perfect, because we were the only ones. After 11 am it became quite busy with tourists and locals (weekend). Our driver was very friendly, enthousiastic and helpful! The food was also very nice.
