Two Pivotal Northern Territory Anecdotes in One Remarkable Site

One initiated its activities in the Territory in 1939, while the other unfolded in 1942, marking an unmatched act of hostility on Australian land. Each event strengthened the tenacity and vigor of the inhabitants of Australia’s Northern Territory.

The first impactful tale is that of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, lovingly referred to as the RFDS throughout Australia. Its inception was due to the Reverend John Flynn, initiating its aerial medical services in the Northern Territory in 1939.

The second significant narrative showcased is the Bombing of Darwin on 19th February 1942. The bombardment of the harbor caused havoc in the city of Darwin, leaving behind many accounts of what transpired that day.

This establishment is situated on the noteworthy site of Stokes Hill Wharf that was targeted during the assault on 19th February 1942.

  • The facility is indoors and air-conditioned. There is audio translation for the hologram cinema sessions in Japanese, German, French and Simplified Chinese.
  • There is complete disability access and a number of seating options throughout the facility for all guests

Amazing insight - Fabulous and emotional insight into the bombing of Darwin and the RFDS. Loved the interactive easy to use vision goggles and movies…we felt like we were right there during that fateful day in 1942 and why we so need the RFDS. Definitely well worth a visit.

Two experiences for the price of one - The Royal Flying Doctor Service Darwin Tourist Facility tells two Darwin stories. The first is the Bombing of Darwin Harbour on 19 February 1942. The same Japanese crew that attacked Pearl Harbour attacked Darwin 10 weeks later. Every 20 minutes, the air raid sirens go off in the museum. That is the signal to head for the map of the harbour in the centre and watch the Bombing of Darwin Harbour on the big screen. Stokes Hill Wharf was destroyed along with several ships. The second story was the Royal Flying Doctor Service which provides medical care for Australians who live in the outback, far from any town. They are flown to either Darwin or Adelaide for treatment in a plane such as the one exhibited here. This is a Pilatus PC12, in use from 1995 through 2016. It has room for two stretchers. There were also virtual reality shows and movies featuring holograms for both stories. I highly recommend a visit here.
