Highlights
  • Debre Libanos - Its one of the ancient and historical monastery in Ethiopia,Which is lying on northwest of Addis Ababa. The monastery was founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot, according to tradition; he meditated in a cave for 29 years. The monastery’s chief abbot, called the Ichege, was the second most powerful official in the Ethiopian Church after the Abuna.

The monastery complex sits on a terrace between a cliff and the gorge of one of the tributaries of the Abbay River. None of the original buildings of Debre Libanos survive, although David Buxton suspected “there are interesting things still to be found among the neighboring cliffs.” Current buildings include the church over Tekle Haymanot’s tomb, which Emperor Haile Selassie ordered constructed in 1961; a slightly older Church of the Cross, where Buxton was told a fragment of the True Cross is preserved; and five religious schools. The cave where the saint lived is in the nearby cliffs, which one travel guide describes as a five-minute walk away. This cave contains a spring, whose water is considered holy and is the object of pilgrimages.

Great family day out of Addis: nature and culture - Being new to Addis, my partner, my daughter (20 months old) and me are willing to discover more about Ethiopia so, checking trip advisor we found this company, with so many good reviews and decided to give it a try, starting with a daytrip in the surroundings of Addis. Overall it was a great experience, we had a lovely family day! Guide (Yihun) and driver (Sisi) were extremely professional and friendly, very helpful, very caring with my daughther. They were very punctual and you can tell they know their job! 100% recommended. The vehicle for the daytrip was in great condition and very appropiate for any kind of road you can find in the country, I appreciated that very much because it makes us feel safe. They had water onboard for us to keep hydratated (particularly hot day). We left about 8 am from Addis and did a first stop, more than 2h later, for a coffee break in a lovely road coffee (that also sells locally made yogurt!) included in the pack. Then when we were almost arriving to Debre Libanos, we were lucky enough to pass by a big groups of local monkeys! We stopped for some minutes to take pictures and observe them. About 11 am we finally arrived to the Monastry. What you actually visit is not the monastry but its church and museum, accompanied by an English speaking guide who is one of the 800 monks living there (he is lovely, his English was a bit difficult to get). The place is quite impressive because its in the middle of a valley, the architecture is not so impressive but its still a beautiful church and you get to learn quite a lot of things about Ethiopia's history, religion, and this monastry, that is the biggest in the country. It's important to notice that women menstruating and couples who had intercourses in the last 48h cannot enter, it is written everywhere when you arrive, but no one told us in advance. After this visit that took about 1h30 (babies need to be in a carrier, not stroller), we did a sightseeing stop to admire the canyon (Jemma Valley), from my point of view, best part of this daytrip was the landscapes, amazing! And after rainy season (from Octobre), it should be even more impressive. Finally, we moved to the German-Ethiopian restaurant, 5 minutes away from Debre Libanos, a lovely restaurant and hotel that was founded by a German-Ethiopian couple years ago (they are not there anymore) on the edge of the canyon, where we had food (note that alcoholic drinks are not included). The food wasn't incredible, but the choices were nice for discovering local food (especially for those who come from abroad and don't know it already), and above all, the place has an incredible charm. From the restaurant, there is a path by which you access the Portuguese bridge, it is about 10 minutes by a steep path, the views are also beautiful, which was the last stop of our day. You can access by car to visit the bridge also but to go down to the bridge itself, the path is a bit complicated if you are not fit. However, we were content to see it from above and it was enough, the truth. It is not so much impressive in itself, but rather the fact that it was handcrafted and locally made. After buying a couple of souvenirs (orthodox crosses made in marbol, since it is an area of marbol extraction), we headed back to Addis, it took us about 3 hours to return too (mainly because of the traffic when arriving in the city). It was almost 6h of road for 4h visit, but it was also interesting for us seeing people and landscapes, villages, chatting with the guide, always very available all along the road. I will for sure hire this company again for further insights into Ethiopia!

Excellent Day Trip - Excellent tour. The monastery is full of history, the monks provide a lot of context on Ethiopia’s christian orthodox roots. Saw some baboons and was able to get close enough for a photo. Ate delicious traditional food and participated in a coffee ceremony. The Portuguese bridge and views of the gorge were beautiful. My guide Sisay was very punctual, arrived at the hotel 5 minutes before departure and wrote me to confirm/advise. He spoke english well and made great conversation.

Amazing day in Ethiopia - I went on this tour on my stopover in Addis Ababa and I can’t recommend it enough! The monastery, the valley and the Portuguese bridge were all so worth seeing. My guide was Yihun, who was very friendly and knowledgeble about Ethiopia and it’s history and told us a lot of interesting fakta and stories throughout the day. He was also willing to meet my wish to send some postcards, went with me to the post office and helped me to solve it out. I recommend Yihun, he’s a perfect guide to spend a day in Ethiopia with. Also the driver Barch did a great job.

Aman Ethiopia Tour Team - I am a female solo traveler from Addis Ababa. At first, I was a bit hesitant to come here by myself, especially given all the mentions in the news about this place. Everything changed after I landed here. Since I have limited time here, I decided to look for some help that can cover a lot of ground so that I don't miss anything. So I found Aman Ethiopia Tours & Travel. So far, I have gone on two trips with this company and it was amazing. First of all, they are well organized, they deliver exactly what they said, they know how to get around the area, they pick you up and drop you off at your destination exactly on time. Also, thank you to George, Abby and Neway. I couldn't have picked better guides. Since it was my first time in the country, I asked a lot of questions and they were answered carefully one by one. Neway's guide was very knowledgeable and explained to me about the country's geography, culture, politics, history, food and every other question I could think of. He made the experience exactly tailored to what I wanted to see. I took a minute to observe all the beauty of the places I visited, but I never felt rushed or like I didn't want to be there. And most importantly, I felt safe. The two trips I took were outside of Addis Ababa, but I never felt uncomfortable or scared. The people were incredibly warm and welcoming.
