The moniker Santorini was bestowed upon it by the Venetians in the 13th century, symbolizing Saint Irene. Earlier, it was known as Kallisti, Strongili or Thera. Nowadays, Santorini is the sole inhabited Caldera (volcanic cauldron) globally. Contrary to other Greek isles, the settlements densely populate the enormous cliffs of the Caldera, and from afar look like snow resting on the high mountain peaks.
