Highlights
  • Alaska Tales - Our tour representatives will meet you at the main cruise ship terminal and check you in for the excursion. You will board a transport bus with a guide that will bring you to the Mendenhall Glacier for 45 minute stop. Here you will be able to explore the area on your own. The parking lot is a very short walking distance to magnificent photo opportunities, hiking trails, visitor’s center, and bear viewing platforms raised above the salmon spawning streams. Once the glacier exploration is complete, we will transport you to the local boat harbor. Where you will be met by our captain and crew who will walk you past the fishing fleet to board one of our state-of-the-art boats built for wildlife viewing. The boats are equipped with restrooms, heated cabins, large windows, comfortable seats, and outdoor decks for viewing. We will then begin a 2 hour journey in search of Humpback Whales and other water wildlife native to the area. You can sit back and relax while taking in the beautiful scenery on the boat ride or assist us in searching for signs of whales including water spouts, tail dives, and whales jumping out of the water. No trip is the same as mother nature decides what to provide for each tour. Your naturalist and crew will interpret what you are seeing and explain the behaviors of the massive and beautiful creatures. At the end of the trip the captain will make an announcement and we will return back to the harbor. Feel free to enjoy a complimentary snack and beverage as you soak up your remaining time on the water. Your driver will meet you at the harbor and bring you back through town to the main cruise ship terminal in downtown Juneau where the excursion started.

Excellent excursion - Captain Justin, Kacie & Ben treated us really well. They were all witty and informative and we felt that they cared whether we saw any whales. We went to 2 different spots and seeing a Mom and calf made our day.

Great day at the glacier and whale watching - The drive to the Mendenhall Glacier and the time spent there gave us a chance to see beautiful landscapes. But, the best was yet to come. We bussed to the harbor where we boarded a boat run by Alaska Tales. The gangplank down to the boat was very steep due to the fact we were at low tide. I am on a walker and was struggling to go down the steep walkway. Greg, a member of the crew ran and got a wheel chair to take me down the ramp. It was very physically taxing for him, but he got me to the bottom. Our captains were James and Jordan, and they put us in position to see seven or eight whales and a large sea otter. Nate was our naturalist guide, and I can not begin to tell you how amazing he made the whale watching experience. He said he has dreamed of whale watching since he was five years old, and it is easy to accept that fact. His knowledge of whales and the aspects of their lives was impressive. He could not have made the day any better. Alaska Tales is a family owned business, and its attention to detail puts all customers at ease. When you get to Juneau, go whale watching with this group. We will not do the glacier again if we come back, but we most certainly will go whale watching, hoping to Nate as our naturalist.

Awesome whale watching with Alaska Tales - Capt James, Steph and Monica were awesome! They went out of their way to make our trip a once in a lifetime event. They found a couple pods of orcas - it was amazing to watch the whales and the enthusiasm of the crew.

Great Whale watching - Mark, Kristen and Ben were great. Kristen was very knowledgeable on whale watching. Great experience. Wish the time at the Mendenhall Glacier was longer so that we could do more time hiking.

A great combination tour - This was a well organized and conducted tour from start to finish. From our shuttle driver to the crew on the whale watch boat all were entertained and informed throughout. We started by boarding the shuttle to Mendenhall Glacier. We had a reasonable amount of time there to explore before re-boarding the shuttle to the harbor where we boarded the boat to go out on our whale watching portion. We viewed humpback whales, as well as one sea lion and a pod of Orcas! The crew were excellent and the information provided during the tour was outstanding. These folks seem truly excited to be there. Reminded me of the old saying about, "if you do something you love you'll never work a day in your life" situations. We would gladly recommend this tour to others, and when we return we'd be happy to take it again!

Juneau Whales and a Glacier - We had a great afternoon with Alaska Tales on May 29th, 2024. The glacier was amazing to see. Our driver to and from (Jay) was very helpful and informative about the Juneau area. Whale watching was, despite the rainy weather, awesome! Our boat crew of Captain Mark, Kristen and Ben led us to great viewing spots, confirmed which whales we were seeing and provided lots of great whale info. @Ben, if you have photos of our whales’ tails that you can share(sell?), we’d love to chat 😊.

Nice trip overall - The tour combined the trips to Mendenhall Glacier and the Whale watch. The bus dropped us at the visitor center and gave us 1 hour to walking around freely. The time is very tight. We had to walk very fast to make a round trip to the fall. There was only a few minuses for photos. We wished to stay longer. The bus then transferred us to the dock for Whale watching. We were able to see a humpback whale mom&calf after about 1 hour boating. The boats were not allowed to stay closer to the whale. The background view of snow mountain is gorgeous though.

Whale Watching Tour - The experience was good. We were late leaving but the rain hit right as we left the ship. The bus driver was great. The bus however was very hot and the seats were too close together. The whale adventure was fun.
