Highlights
  • Taras Shevchenko National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ukraine - Established in 1867, the National Opera of Ukraine is the third oldest opera house in the country. It is located in the National Opera House in Kiev, named after the renowned poet and artist Taras Shevchenko, and built in 1901. The venue continues to host an excellent program of opera and ballet, with affordable tickets available.
  • Golden Gate - The Golden Gate is one of Kiev’s most iconic landmarks. It served as the main gate of ancient Kiev for centuries and has now become a major attraction in the Ukrainian capital. Be sure to find the city’s most famous cat, learn the legend, and make a wish.
  • National Reserve Sophia Kievskaya - Saint-Sophia Cathedral, situated in the historic center of Kiev, is a significant monument showcasing the architectural and monumental art of the early 11th century.
  • St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery - Located opposite St. Sophia’s Cathedral, St. Michael’s Cathedral was originally built by Prince Sviatopolk in 1108 but was destroyed by the Soviet regime in the 1930s for allegedly having “no historical value.” The reconstructed cathedral was completed in May 2000 and is one of the main temples of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchate. It is a must-see during a city tour.
  • National Museum of the History of Ukraine - Visit the Old Kiev hill, the birthplace of ancient Kiev. Make a wish next to the oldest linden tree in town, pass by the National History Museum, and enjoy one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the Podil riverside area.
  • Andriivskyi Descent - Known as the Montmartre of Kyiv, Andriyivsky Descent is one of the oldest streets in the Ukrainian capital. It captivates with its legendary history, unique colors, and distinctive architectural ensemble. Here, you can see the stunning St. Andrew’s Church and learn the mystical stories behind it. It’s also a great place to shop for souvenirs.
  • Lysa Hora - Pass by Lysa Hora (Bald Hill) and explore the trendy area of Vozdvizhenka. Every house and facade is a work of art, reflecting the architectural style of the late 19th century, primarily Baroque and “Kiev” Art Nouveau with Gothic variations. Even the fashionable shops, cafes, and galleries on the ground floors are designed to convey the spirit of old Podil.
  • Kontraktova Square - As the compositional center of Podil, Kontraktova Square is a sight to behold. Known as the oldest square in Kiev, it dates back to 1798 and was named for its role in hosting Russian fairs and serving merchants and customers. The square is vast and beautiful, surrounded by buildings that each tell a different story.
  • People’s Friendship Arch - The Friendship of Nations Monument is a massive metal arch celebrating the 1654 ‘unification’ of Russia and Ukraine. Located on an elevated plaza, it offers great views of the Dnipro River and Kyiv’s left (east) bank. Beneath the arch is a social-realist statue depicting a Ukrainian and a Russian, arms raised in solidarity.
  • Kiev River Boat Station - Enjoy the riverside area at Post Square.
  • Khreshchatyk - Strolling through this area, you can admire historical monuments, luxurious homes with stately columns and moldings, and unique architecture primarily from the 1950s. Khreshchatyk has always been and remains the most important artery of the capital. The street, over a kilometer long, is home to many interesting and famous attractions. Modern Khreshchatyk also boasts beautiful restaurants, cozy cafes, and numerous souvenir shops.
  • Besarabsky Market - This food market is famous for its interesting small shops. Be sure to taste Ukrainian black caviar here.
  • Maidan Nezalezhnosti - The main square of the Ukrainian capital, featuring the Alley of Heavenly Hundred Heroes and the story of the Revolution of Dignity.

The best way to see and understand Kiev in a day - We very much enjoyed our 6 hour, full day tour with Eliza. Everything from booking, to payment, and pre-discussion of our preferences and wishes were taken care of via email, so on the day of the tour everything turned out great. Eliza picked us up at our hotel and took us around the city, letting us know not only the history of the city, but also current sentiments and events, answering any questions along the way and being very flexible with stops to escape from the cold, have drinks/lunch etc... We're very glad we booked this tour as we only had 1.5 days to explore the city, and we came away with a much better understanding of the city with UkraineToGo than we ever could have on our own.

6h Private Walking Tour of Kiev - We took a walking tour of Kiev on Easter weekend. Our guide, Ksenia, was lovely and very friendly, and spoke great English. She was super knowledgeable about the history and culture of Kiev, and had interesting facts, myths, and stories to share about the various attractions. She was happy to take us wherever we wanted and adapted her tour to our interests. She also had great tips about where to go/what to do after the tour was over, and was able to answer all of our questions in that regard. She showed us some really cool little shops and had great bar and restaurant recommendations, too. I'd highly recommend Ksenia's tour to anyone who wants to learn about the culture and history of Kiev, and learn a bit about life in Ukraine.

If you’re going to do a tour in Kiev, you’ve found it! - I spent my 30th birthday in Kiev with friends and we spent the first day with Ksenia on this tour to get first acquainted with the city - could not recommend more. as a Kiev native she not only had endless insights and knowledge about the city, but also O’Rorke’s up personally about her life and family there. She also accommodated all of our various interests, needs, and requests along the way. The next day we saw the big group tours walking around, and we could not even imagine having gone down that road. Thanks Ksenia!!
