Additional Information

Leiden, following Amsterdam, is recognized as the Netherlands’ second most significant city when it comes to canals and waterways. Housing over 57 bridges within the city center, it presents an exceptional experience that shouldn’t be overlooked. Some locals endearingly refer to Leiden as mini Amsterdam.

The only guided walking tour of Leiden listed on TripAdvisor or Viator in the Netherlands comes complete with a well-informed guide offering essential insights into the city’s culture, historical importance, and recent developments. This tour can also be paired with the Dutch windmill and polder walking tour located at the city’s edge.

Leiden’s distinctive features include the globally-acclaimed Leiden University structures, grand residences, and museums hosting impressive exhibitions. Particularly for travelers hailing from the USA, Leiden holds notable historical value due to its association with the Pilgrim Fathers, 17th century inhabitants of the city.

Location

Stationsplein
Our usual pick up location is in front of the Starbucks coffee shop at the front side of the Leiden central station. I am usually recognizable immediately because I will have a pram with me. You will be accompanied by myself and my little one in the pram.

A must do your highly recommend - Leiden is a must visit city whilst in Netherlands, the architecture, history and vibes are amazing. The tour organizer Mr. Punartha Perera is best person to contact if you want to explore Leiden, he shared all the hot spots and knows the city inside out. I recommend everyone to visit Leiden instead of limiting your stay to Amsterdam as it's just a 30min train journey away.

Stunning, beautiful Leiden - She is worth a visit - Leiden is absolutely stunning - It is like a smaller, less crowded Amsterdam, with lots of canals and history. It is home to a waka taua or Māori war canoe that is housed at the National Museum of Antiquities (Rijksmuseum van Oudheden) It is a student town, and we were there during the orientation week for the University of Leiden. The University is quite the heart of the town. The square and shopping is a short walk from the centraal station. We followed the garden walk, as shown us by people from the Leiden Museum and wondered through a beautiful walk, that sometimes felt like passing through someones garden (which we suspected they were) When people heard we were going to Leiden they were surprised as it is not a tourist destination. We attended a conference at the University of Leiden Library, and delighted in the beautiful daily walk. Orientation was helped by locals, and some awesome spots to dine were enjoyed. The students and their OWL week fun was a joy to witness. To our great delight we were blessed to visit the Bibliotheca Thysiana. I would recommend staying a couple of days in Leiden to break up a trip with the crazyness of Amsterdams tourists, and Rotterdams modernness.
