Highlights
  • Praca dos Restauradores - This location features the Obelisk of the Independence of Spain and the renowned Elevador da Gloria.
  • Elevador da Gloria - This historic elevator carries passengers from Restauradores to São Pedro de Alcântara.
  • Rossio Train Station - A stunning train station designed in the Manueline style.
  • Rossio Square - This square is home to the D. Maria II Theater and the Statue of D. Pedro IV.
  • Elevador de Santa Justa - Historically, this elevator transported people from Rua Áurea to Largo do Carmo, where the ruins of Igreja do Carmo are found.
  • Museum of the Orient - The Fundação Oriente Museum is located in the former warehouses of the Cod Trade Regulatory Commission. It showcases collections focused on the Orient, covering historical, religious, anthropological, and artistic aspects. The permanent exhibition includes 1,400 pieces related to the Portuguese presence in Asia and 650 pieces from the Kwok On collection.
  • LX Factory - Originally established in 1846 as the Companhia de Fiação e Tecidos Lisbonense, one of Lisbon’s key manufacturing complexes. Over the years, it was occupied by Companhia Industrial de Portugal e Colónias, Anuário Comercial de Portugal typography, and Gráfica Mirandela. In 2005, a real estate company purchased and revitalized the area, reopening it in 2008 as a hub of creativity and experiences. Retaining its industrial spaces, it now hosts arts sector companies, shops, cafes, and restaurants. With around 50 diverse stores, LX Factory Lisboa is a popular shopping destination.
  • Mosteiro dos Jeronimos - Visit one of Portugal’s most beautiful churches, housing the tombs of Vasco da Gama, poet Luís de Camões, and King Manuel I’s family. The Jerónimos Monastery, built in the late 15th century by King Manuel I, was entrusted to the Order of Saint Jerome.
  • Palacio de Belem - Designated the official residence of the President of the Republic in 1912 after the proclamation of the republic. In the 18th century, D. João V purchased it from the Count of Aveiras and made significant alterations. During the 1755 earthquake, King D. José I and his family, who were vacationing in Belém, survived and set up tents on the palace grounds, using the interior as a hospital. D. Maria II lived in the palace for a few years while the Palácio das Necessidades was under construction. From the reign of D. Luís I, the palace hosted official guests visiting Lisbon. In 1886, it became the official residence of Royal Princes D. Carlos, Duke of Bragança, and his wife D. Amélia de Orleães.
  • Pastéis de Belém - Enjoy one of the 7 wonders of Portuguese gastronomy without waiting in long lines. Our guide will purchase them for you. While custard tarts are available in many cafes and pastry shops, the original recipe is a secret of Fábrica dos Pastéis de Belém in Lisbon, the only place where they are called Pastéis de Belém. Traditionally, they are eaten hot, sprinkled with powdered sugar and cinnamon. In 2011, Pastel de Belém was named one of the 7 Wonders of Portuguese Gastronomy.
  • Centro Cultural de Belem - CCB - Built to host the 1992 Portuguese presidency of the European Union, the CCB remains a dynamic center for cultural and leisure activities. It occupies the space initially intended for the “Portuguese in the World” Pavilion and the “Portuguese Villages” at the 1940 Portuguese World Exhibition.
  • Torre de Belem - Visit the exterior of the Belém Tower. Originally named Torre de São Vicente, it lost its defensive role over time and, during the Philippine occupation, its magazines were converted into dungeons. The tower’s four floors include the Governor’s Room, the King’s Room, the Audience Room, and the Chapel with its 16th-century vaults. Built in 1514, the Tower of São Vicente was part of a defense system for the Tagus basin ordered by João II of Portugal, along with the towers of São Sebastião da Caparica (1481) and Santo António de Cascais (1488).
  • Padrao dos Descobrimentos - The Discoveries Monument, also known as the Monument to the Navigators, stands prominently on the right bank of the Tagus River. The original monument, made of perishable materials, was erected in 1940 for the Portuguese World Exhibition to honor figures from the Portuguese Discoveries. The current concrete and stone replica was inaugurated in 1960.
  • MAAT - Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology - The former Electricity Museum, part of the EDP Foundation, was located in the old Central Tejo on Av. of Brasilia, Lisbon.
  • National Coach Museum - This museum houses the world’s most significant collection of coaches and royal carriages from the 16th to the 19th century.
  • MAAT - Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology - The MAAT is a contemporary art museum in Lisbon that integrates art, architecture, and technology in a space for debate, discovery, critical thinking, and international dialogue.
  • Cordoaria Nacional - The Fábrica Nacional de Cordoaria, or Cordoaria Nacional, was a manufacturing facility for the Portuguese Navy. Its buildings stretch nearly 400 meters long and about 50 meters wide, paralleling the Tagus River, designed to meet production needs. Located by the river for easy supply access, the building now hosts various exhibitions throughout the year, including the Bienal de Antiguidades, featuring tapestries, furniture, paintings, and porcelain.
  • Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga - The National Museum of Ancient Art is Portugal’s most important museum for art from the 12th to the 19th centuries, housing the country’s most significant public collection of ancient art.
  • Largo do Chiado - Here, you can see the writer Fernando Pessoa sitting at the café A Brasileira and the statue of writer António Ribeiro Chiado.
  • Elevador da Bica - Stop for a photo of this magnificent elevator with the Tagus River in the background.
  • Praca Luis de Camoes - Dedicated to the great Portuguese poet who wrote about the country’s discoveries.
  • Teatro Nacional de São Carlos - In this square, opposite the theater, Fernando Pessoa was born. It replaced the Teatro Ópera do Tejo, which was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake.

Perfect day in Lisbon and Belém - Wonderful tour of Lisbon and Belém with André! We really enjoyed being picked up at our hotel in André’s tuk tuk and escorted to all of the places in Lisbon we would never have found on our own. Quaint streets, gorgeous views, interesting local people and places - it was such a perfect way to get to know the city. Belém is beautiful as well, especially the tower and huge monument to Portuguese exploration. But what sets André apart is his knowledge of the area, the delicious treats and his engaging personality. We did two tours with him and now consider him our friend in Lisbon!
