A great way to spend a day out! - The Taste of Afghanistan and Syria was excellent. The group size was perfect and our host Sahar was very informative and welcoming. There was a good amount of food to try, with it not being overwhelming. The tour includes a good balance of restaurant and retailer and introduces some fantastic new flavours to your palette! Would highly recommend for locals and visitors to Sydney.

This tour was like taking a trip to another country, a short drive from home. It is a wonderful opportunity to discover the Afghan and Syrian culture in our own town.

Be a tourist in your own city - this tour is highly recommended! - A wonderful day of discovering the food and culture of Syria, Afghanistan and beyond with Sahar as our guide. She was so warm and friendly in her manner, and very knowledgeable about everything from food to architecture. Hard to pick a favourite place. Restaurants, small supermarkets with lots on offer, a Persian patisserie and an Afghan bakery; everything so interesting. From the Syrian breakfast at Al Shami to the Persian saffron ice-cream/carrot juice creation at the end of the tour - so many new flavours and culinary ideas. The Afghani bread, fresh from the oven, was delicious. I won't give away what the jam was made from - a real surprise! I will definitely book another tour with Taste Tours - as soon as I decide which one. I whole-heartedly recommend this social enterprise organisation.

Saffron Ice-Cream! Who Knew? An amazing, fun tour that I highly recommend. - What a fantastic experience this was and a great way to spend a few hours. The tour got off to a great start when I was greeted by the Tour Leader - Sahar. She was so friendly and welcoming and from the outset, it was clear to me that she has a great passion for what she does and was proud to introduce me to new flavours and food that I hadn't experienced before. At each place we visited, we were welcomed in the same by all of the owners and staff. Al Shami Syrian Restaurant was a particular favourite to me at the start of the tour (I will be going back!), but it's almost unfair to rank them as all of the food was amazing. I don't have the best knees so going on a walking tour is potentially going to be a challenge for me, but I must say, that it never felt like we were walking too far at any moment and things flowed well from beginning to the end. The other guests on the tour all seemed like-minded so chatting with new people was nice and not something I had factored in when booking this tour. By the way - there's plenty of food included - I was very full by the end....make sure you come with an empty stomach.

Best Food Tour! - It was an excellent food tour. I could never have guessed the incredible food within the restaurants and foodstores of Merrylands. Our guide was also very knowledgeable and I am now completely addicted to rose tea as well as freshly made Afghani bread!

Great shared experience. Fully recommend. - My wife and I started the tour at Al Shami where we were greeted by Sahar (Tour Leader) and Ali (Owner of Al Shami). Sahar was so welcoming, passionate, and provided a lot of information about the food-flavours-countries (also a lot of answers to our questions always with a smile). We had been to Merrylands before some 15 years ago (we are from Sydney) but never experienced it the way Sahar did it on the tour. At each place we visited, we were greeted by the owner/staff which personalised the visit. From the breads to the spices, to the mix of flavours, we could not describe each item we tasted as the review would be too long. We could not even say which one was the best as each one was special in its own way either to our understanding or to our palate (or tummy). It was not a very long tour in terms of distance (300m as the crow flies from start to finish) but you do add to it as you walk around in some of the shops we visited. Trust me, it was good to walk as, by the end of the tour, we needed to spend the energy due to the amount of food we had. We would recommend avoiding breakfast on the day you do the tour. Another thing to note is that Merrylands railway station is less than a hundred meters from Al Shami (closest to Platform 2) where the tour starts and less than two hundred meters where the tour ends. If you are visiting Sydney, the train is a great option to travel to/from Merrylands. We had a small group, and it was great to chat with / meet like-minded people who were keen to understand and taste the flavours. The Al Shami Syrian Restaurant (Thank you Ali) will definitely be a place we will go back to as we only did the entrée in this restaurant and the menu looks amazing. Thank you again to Sahar for a great tour.
