- Plaza de Toros de Mijas - Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra de Mijas Mountains, the captivating town of Mijas is encircled by a pine forest.
The town clings to the side of the mountain at an elevation of 428 meters and is home to 7,500 residents. The closest major city is the coastal resort of Fuengirola (8km), while Malaga airport is a 25-minute drive away. Mijas has preserved a lot of its traditional ‘white village’ character, with its labyrinth of cobblestone streets, stark white walls, and stunning vistas.
Evidence of Mijas’s long history has been substantiated by archaeological discoveries near the ‘Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepcion’. This church, which was finished in the early 18th century, is built over the remnants of a Moorish fortress that existed from the 8th to the late 15th century. Before the Moors, the Romans utilized Mijas, then known as ‘Tamisa’ or ‘Jamisa’, as a significant hub for commerce and trade due to its proximity to the route that connected Malaga and Cadiz.
