Not Eagle’s Nest—But better - We changed out entire trip to get to go to the Eagle’s Nest since we were told it didn’t open until the middle of May. Several days before the reserved trip, we get an email saying it was not open and we would be going to the Salt Mine. We were allowed to cancel, but since we wanted to see the area around Bertchesgarden, we decided to go. On arriving at the bus we were informed by our guide we would not go to the Salt Mine, but to the ruins of the Berghof and the document center and bunker. To us that sounded much better. It was MUCH better. Our guide was fantastic. She gave a running story lesson. The Berghof was Hitler’s main dwelling. The area became a major Nazi headquarters with many other officials’ homes in the compound. We walked down to the place the Berghoff (a home Borman had remodeled for Hitler) had stood and saw the famous view out across the valley. Then we had time to throughly peruse the documents center and explore the bunker complex that had been built for the top officials’ protection after Stalingrad and the realization they may need just such a protected retreat. All the pictures we’ve seen in history films showing the patio with Hitler, Eva, the officials, the German shepherd dog were all at the Berghof. The pictures of the steps out front and the dignitaries being received are all at the Berghof. Nothing important happened up at the Eagle’s Nest. Just a great view and catchy name. The house became a place of pilgrimage for the locals and for Germans to take a vacation to come pay homage. We learned that Borman built the Eagle’s Nest as a gift to Hitler after the complex was established as Hitler’s headquarters. Hitler only visited it 3 times and there are only 3 rooms. Our time and experience was much better spent with the “substitute plan” than it would have been going to the Salt Mine and even up to the Eagle’s Nest. We were fortunate and would recommend time spend at the “lower level” instead of the ride up to the nest. Definitely better and much more significant than a Salt mine.

Bus trip from Munich - Long day but very interesting. The guide was good. There is another bus to take to the Eagles Nest area; then a tunnel to walk through; and finally, an elevator. Important to know what time to get on the bus to return; and allow time for the elevator and long tunnel to the bus. Views are spectacular. Ther's a "corridor" that has info about Hitler.

Breathtaking Views - Marianne was the best tour guide, extremely knowledgeable and personable. She ensured we were timely, reorganized the tour in a moment's notice due to traffic. Eagle's Nest was breathtaking views. Highly recommend this tour and especially Marianne who gave highlights throughout the bus ride. Bus was very clean and comfortable.

Das. Kehlstein Haus - Views are exceptional. House ok, Did not eat in Restaurant. Impressive to consider the engineering required to put an elevator inside the mountain. Berchtesgaden is a very nice quiet village
