Additional Information

Auschwitz, the German concentration camps, are a powerful symbol of the horrors of World War II. Established by the Nazis in the occupied territories of Poland in 1940, near the town of Oswiecim, these camps were transformed into a museum shortly after the war’s conclusion, in 1947. Visitors can today witness the circumstances under which the prisoners lived, and truly comprehend the scale of the atrocities committed against them.

The existing museum spans two remaining sections of the former Nazi death camp – Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau. Together, they encompass a vast region where the prisoners’ accommodations, the remnants of the crematoria and gas chambers, and the Birkenau railway platform are situated.

Auschwitz-Birkenau - Arranged down to the last detail! During the autumn holidays, I booked a 5-day trip to Krakow via Simonsetours.nl together with my daughters, aged 14 and 16 at the time. (Recommended!) Barbara from the travel agency booked the trip and excursions for us and in Poland the contact with Wictoria was via WhatsApp, she kept us constantly informed of where and at what time we were expected for our excursions. We received excellent guidance from start to finish and were able to enjoy our trip without any worries. The travel agency recommended booking a packed lunch as it would be a long day. This was delivered to our hotel in Krakow by Wictoria. The visit to Auschwitz and Birkenau left a deep impression. We had an English-speaking guide, she told us about the gruesome history of both camps. There was also plenty of time to look around and take it all in silently. The train carriage at the place where families were separated especially made a lot of sense to me and my children. Everyone should go to Auschwitz-Birkenau at least once in their life, especially if you have children.

Excellent service - We used this service to both book and transport us to and from Aushwitz, then onto the salt mines. Bartek, our driver was absolutely brilliant. He couldn’t have done any more for us. 100% recommend using him. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Well organised - Well organised, comfortable timely transport. The trip was broken up with a few breaks which helped as it was a tough day.

Once in lifetime 'must see'. - It will live long in the memory. Should be compulsory for all school children to visit. If we can't learn from mistakes of the past then this will only happen again. The guide was superb, so knowledgeable - the whole experience is sympathetically and respectfully arranged with some areas strictly no photos. I was worried it would be a bit 'disneyfied' but instead it was 'dignified'. The only reason I haven't rated it 5 stars is because there was no hotel pickup as advertised, instead you have to make your way to a designated pickup point in Krakow.

History up close - It was surreal, having read the books and seen the films, to be walking around Auschwitz and Birkenau camps, and seeing for myself to a degree the conditions and listening to guide (spoke broken English, and sometimes found it hard to hear/ understand) explain what happened in detail to the “prisoners” The tour felt rushed, there were a couple of people that walked with sticks and they couldn’t keep up, and had to keep finding places to sit down. At one point the man apologised for holding the group up bless him. At Auschwitz, in one of the barracks, there is a corridor lined with pictures of the “prisoners” the pictures themselves were haunting and have the details of the date of birth, date of arrival in the camp and date of execution, I was reading a few of the details of the pictures, some twins, some brothers and sisters, but kept getting pushed in the back by the guide of the next group to move on. It was a fascinating visit to both camps, the horrors of war, the persecution of a people because of one man’s belief, and given what’s going on in the world since and now, what have we learned ???

My experience leaves me with little confidence. - The tour company cancelled the tour with less than 24 hours notice. This is after multiple attempts to get in touch with the tour company either directly or through Viator days in advance to confirm the trip with no response. Being an incredibly popular tour, the last minute cancellation leaves little room to make alternative arrangements. The tour company agreed to a full refund. However, this is of limited compensatory value as it is rather distracting, to say the least, to have to source alternative plans whilst trying to enjoy one’s holiday. Equally to blame, perhaps, Viator confirmed that it has no visibility of whether the actual tour goes ahead or not, which means the auto-confirmation function on the Viator website/app has no bearing whatsoever on the actual tour. By failing to make clear to consumers this lack of back-to-back guarantee in relation to the ‘confirmation’ function, Viator is at best misleading as a tour booking agency.

Absolutely terrible - I would never book with this tour operator again. The day before our tour, I reached out to them asking for the pick-up time and received a message back saying they might have to cancel due to the unavailability of a local guide. I contacted Viator who told us that we were ‘confirmed’, but they would reach out to the operator to get the pick-up time. We called the tour operator’s representative who then told us that the tour was cancelled, that we should tell Viator that we had to cancel due to illness to get a refund and that then they would try to get us tickets. They specifically told us that if we said they cancelled they might lose their license - basically telling us to lie. When I reached out to Viator with this information, both through WhatsApp messaging and on the telephone, they kept telling me that the booking was ‘confirmed’ and that I should wait to hear from the operator for that reason. I kept telling them that I know the tour was cancelled and wanted a refund. Keep in mind, the 4th time I spoke to Viator was at 9:45PM - and I still had no pick-up time for a tour that was supposed to begin the next day. Ultimately, I did receive a refund from Viator, but it caused a lot of stress and took too much effort. We had one day set aside for this trip. Luckily we went on our own, got tickets and were able to make it happen without having to go through Viator or a tour company.
