Highlights

Santiago City Tour (3 hours):

After hotel pickup, drive with your guide by the gleaming skyscrapers of ‘Sanhattan,’ the city’s high-end finance center and then head to the civic center. In the neighborhood of Republica, learn about the district formerly home to the 20th century elite and check out Club Hipíco, a thoroughbred racecourse founded in 1869, reconstructed after a fire to resemble Longchamp in France. Then pass by the presidential offices of neoclassical La Moneda Palace and learn its history, including the 1973 overthrow of President Allende that took place here. Walk over to the festive main square of Plaza de Armas, punctuated with palm trees, and gaze upon more gorgeous examples of neoclassical architecture, the Metropolitan Cathedral and Correo Central, the old post office.

Back in the vehicle, travel to the top of Cerro San Cristóbal in Metropolitan Park, the city’s largest urban green space, and capture sweeping panoramas of Santiago with the Andes mountains in the background. Next, admire bohemian Bellavista, its colorful tree-lined streets popping with trendy boutiques, eateries and avant-garde galleries housed in lofts and stately mansions, a barrio partly made famous because Pablo Neruda had lived in this hilly neighborhood. End the tour at Mercado Central, a wrought-iron fish market named by National Geographic as one of the top 10 food markets in the world, and watch dizzying displays of chopping, filleting, weighing and wrapping of all kinds of fish.

Enjoy a variety of options to conclude your city tour: choose to stay at Mercado Central longer and make your own way back to your hotel, ask to be dropped off at a mall where you can shop for those one-of-a-kind souvenirs or simply take immediate transport back to your hotel.

We were the only couple on this tour... -
We were the only couple on this tour so it worked out better than we could have expected. Our guide, Ignacio, was obviously proud of his city and very knowledgeable about it's history. Because we had taken the Hop on, Hop off bus the day before he modified his usual tour. As a result we walked many interesting back streets to get a better look and feel of the city. We ended up catching the changing of the guard at the President's Palace. Later we visited the famous fish market and from there decided to go straight to Concha y Toro. The visit at the winery was also very informative and we had an excellent guide. Following the tour we stopped at their restaurant area and enjoyed more wine and tapas, chatting with a new found friend. We were enjoying this so much that Ignacio came looking for us to leave. He wanted to try and avoid the afternoon traffic back in Santiago. All in all a wonderful day and extremely good value for money.

Overall it was very enjoyable, especially with our guide Maryann to explain all about the city.
The second part of the excursion was a trip to the Concha y Toro winery. We were able to see now the grapes are grown and stored. There was even wine samplings.

Our tour was on time. The tour... -
Our tour was on time. The tour guide had excellent English skills, and clearly knew the city very well: he was well qualified to conduct the tour. He just was not really into the customer service part. He did the tour as described. But this was booked as a combined tour, yet some people on the morning city tour were not continuing on for the afternoon winery tour, so we spent a LOT of time stuck in heavy traffic taking one person back to her hotel. One couple decided to stay with us for the afternoon tour after all, so thankfully we didn't have to go to their hotel as well. A better choice on helping us avoid the hour or so spent in traffic just for that one person, traffic was heavy for the entire itinerary of the city part of the tour would have been to take us to the BellaVista neighborhood for our independant lunch stop BEFORE driving the one person to her hotel.
The Conch Y Toro tour was great...but one family had an additional tasting and we all had to wait for them to finish up...and that ended up being an hour. It made us feel like second class tour members. I think our tour guide could have done something with US while they had their tasting. He was not interested in extending our experience.
In all, the things seen in the tour were as described, and were all very engaging. The winery tour was much better than I expected: we've visited wineries in many places, so are beyond being impressed by the process. But they did a really nice job with the tour. And since it was harvest time, we got to go into a special vistor's vineyard and taste grapes off the vine, where there were MANY varieties available. We were simply turned loose to taste whatever we wanted for about 10 minutes or so. Great fun comparing the taste of grapes of many varieties. They have a fine wine shop there, with wines we don't see at home, which we enjoyed buying and later drinking.
I would say the tour was a good value.

Pick up on time and message left for... -
Pick up on time and message left for us in hotel. Good tour but we had to leave bus for 1.5 hrs and walk with guide to see many of the sights. No problem for us but could be for older/disabled in hot sun. Also had to wait 20 mins in sun for bus to pick us up at end. Back to hotel for lunch. Winery tour pm was good. Lovely setting with 3 tastings and presentation glass but did not see any wine making processes. Traffic horrendous on way back so v late to hotel. Confusion common with bookings re first name and surname and which comes first in the country you are in. Viator you should be well aware of this so SORT IT OUT so drivers and guides have the correct names.

City Sightseeing - the tour was ok... -
City Sightseeing - the tour was ok. Our tour guide left a lot to be desired. I don't feel like I learned a lot and I spent a lot of time just trying to keep up with her. It was only 5 of us in the tour group, but 3 of us were English speakers and 2 of us were Spanish speaking. She spent more time engaging with Spanish speakers than English speakers. There was not a lot of time to take photos and it all felt rushed. One highlight though was seeing flamingos an black and white swans.

Concha y Toro - Was better than the city tour. Our driver was very nice and gave us information about the various parts of town we passed through to get to the winery and gave us some background on Chilean wine. The actual tour on the winery was great. We were able to taste grapes, taste wines, and tour the facility.
