Highlights
  • Thingvellir National Park - At Thingvellir National Park, Iceland gave birth to its first parliament and was the first democratic national parliament in the world. It’s called Althing (Alþing). Therefore it’s Iceland’s most significant and historical and geological places. The parliament was founded in the year 930 AD and is the oldest parliament in the world that’s still fully operating. Althing was held outdoors at Thingvellir until the year 1844 when the Icelandic Parliament was moved to Iceland’s capital Reykjavik and has been operated there ever since.

At Thingvellir, you can clearly see where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet and also how spectacularly these plates have been drifting apart. At the slow and non-violent speed the plates drift apart at the rate of 2 cm (0.79 in) per year. This process is steadily forming the island’s markable landscape over millions of years. After your visit to this markable place, you’ll leave with a sense of history as you explore more of the Icelandic nature since the area is a high concentration of volcanic activity and many newly lava fields can be found in many places as well as several lava tubes.

Additional Information

On this excursion, you’ll experience a combination of two of Iceland’s most popular routes, The Golden Circle and South Coast. This journey gives you the opportunity to explore some of Iceland’s most extraordinary locations, such as the historically and geologically significant Þingvellir National Park, Geysir geothermal area, and Gullfoss (Golden Waterfall).

In Thingvellir, you can observe the separation of the American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Þingvellir is also renowned as the site of the world’s first parliament. The Geysir geothermal area is home to Strokkur, the largest geyser, which spectacularly erupts a pillar of water 20 to 30 meters into the air every 5 to 10 minutes. The Gullfoss (Golden Waterfall), created by the river Hvítá, is one of Iceland’s most awe-inspiring waterfalls. You’ll also witness the grandeur of Skógafoss at Skógar and the stunning Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall you can walk behind and exit on the other side. Lastly, you’ll visit the black sand beach Reynisfjara, where the Atlantic Ocean powerfully crashes against the shoreline.

All the highlights - This was a wonderful combined tour that hit all the highlights. Our driver was friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend this tour, especially if you are short on time as it combined the two most popular areas for things to see.

I have to say, that this was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. - My friends and I used Oak Travel for our recent trip to Iceland and had a private tour of the Golden Circle and the South Coast. Not only did we get to see so many amazing places in the Golden Circle and the South Coast, but our guide, Siggi, was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. We spent hours laughing with him and learned so much about Icelandic history and culture while going from one place to the next. I would highly recommend this tour company to anyone looking for an unforgettable adventure

Professional, friendly and VIP - Our first trip to Iceland and we are so lucky to have found Oak Travel and Thorir. Our tour was tailor made, starting from the airport, covering the south coast and back to golden circle / blue lagoon. It was a special occasion and we wanted to go at an easy pace. Everything was amazing, from the selection of hotels to cafes to the sights. Thorir was great company and professional. He was flexible and always there to help, including offering us his personal gear when we needed it ! Even added off the beaten track special stops. We would definitely recommend him to everyone for an amazing Icelandic experience.
