Amazing tour of Chaluma and Zinacantán culture - Amazing tour. Our guide Rodrigo was both knowledgeable and friendly about San Juan Chaluma and the handmade textiles from Zinacantán. Highly recommend!

Interesting cultural trip - San Juan Chamula is very fascinating with their syncretic mix of shamanism and Catholicism. Zinacantan is okay. Definitely a good trip.

Great experiences to be had - I was very lucky to visit both of these communities on the last day of festivals, so they were both full of people and atmosphere. I absolutely loved the church pictured here at Chamula. I'm catholic but not religious at all, but their mix of catholic and traditional faith just moved me.

A highlight in a cultural sense - I visited both villages. Don‘t go for the „we take you in a typical home of this village (zinancatan)“. It‘s not, it‘s a place to shop. But the handcrafted fabrics are stunningly beautiful. Our guide was Marina. She (said) is from Zinancatan. She had totally interesting stories to tell about her people, the indigenous people of Zinancatan. They are Mayans that separated a long time ago to become an own tribe, they did not like the politics. They have their on language. They decided the live like once upon a time. It reminded me of the Amish people. Unfortunately I don‘t remember the agency I book with. Just ask around in real de Guadeloupe (main only pedestrian street), somebody will know her. Her background story about her life seems a bit made up - but not sure. Same goes for San Juan Chamula. Lot‘s of knowledge. The thing to see here is the church or better said what is going on in the church. Won‘t spoil your experience.

Great guide - We had an excellent driver/guide, Miguel. He spoke English, French, the local dialects, and maybe more. In Zinacantán, we basically just went to a house and we’re told about traditions, tried the local drink, could put on the wedding attire and take pictures, and then shop. They also made us some tacos and coffee in their traditional kitchen. Then we went to San Juan Chamula. We were told not to take pictures of people. There are a few mansions in the town, apparently related to some trade not talked about. We then went into the church. It’s not a traditional church, lots candles everywhere, definitely interesting. This tour was on time and lasted the amount of time advertised.

Not worth the money - We were picked up half an hour late and then went to Zinacantan to see the weavers who make traditional clothing and rugs. Then a short visit to the church and then on the way to San Juan Chamula. Here we visit a souvenir shop, no idea why, then we walk to the Mayan church where you are not allowed to take photos. Inside, everything is covered with grass because of the candle wax and candles are burning everywhere and people are healed of diseases and aches and pains according to Mayan tradition. You don't want to stay indoors for long because of the heat and alcohol smell. You are also not allowed to photograph people outside. After this visit you will return to the hotel, so it is not very special for the money and you can also go there yourself
