Highlights
  • Peekaboo Gulch - The slot canyon is most famous because of the last 100 meters, before the junction with Dry Fork of Coyote Gulch - here the ravine cuts deeper into the sandstone, with a series of interlinked potholes, extravagant swirls and fins of rock, and several arches; these different openings and the many corners and crevices account for the curious name of this canyon.
  • Spooky Gulch - Only 10 inches wide at some points, Spooky is appropriately named. It is possible to travel almost halfway through before the first of two climbs, so go ahead and squeeze through as far as you dare.
What's Included
  • Complimentary bottled water
Additional Information

Topping the list of must-see sights in Southern Utah is the pairing of Peek-a-Boo and Spooky Slot Canyons. Renowned hikes situated in the Dry Fork region of the Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument, they form an exciting circuit you can complete in an afternoon thrill. Whisk yourself into a picturesque landscape of ruby and lavender rock formations, arches, and slim slot canyons after entering.

Starting from the trailhead, our journey takes us scrambling moderately down some compact cliffs to the Dry Fork Wash. Off the cliff and into the sandy landscape, follow the creek wash till the entrance of Peek-a-Boo becomes visible. Post Peek-a-Boo, an adjacent hike will lead to the opening of Spooky Gulch. Carefully descend a gentle rock face to enter the canyon. It soon narrows down offering a delightful challenge as you navigate through this captivating narrow canyon.

Fabulous - Regan, our guide, was absolutely wonderful. He managed to get us to places throughout the slot canyons that I didn't think we could have done. It was one of the most enjoyable experiences of our vacation. Highly recommend Regan and this Peekaboo, Dry fork, Spooky slot canyon tour.

The Highlight of our Mighty Five road trip - Our hike thru the Dry Fork, Peekaboo and Spooky slot canyons were the HIGHLIGHT of our Mighty Five trip thru Utah. Our guide, Regan, was outstanding! His knowledge of the geology and history of the region was an added bonus to the beauty of the landscape. On top of that Regan was endlessly encouraging as we made our way thru challenging terrain always ready with a strong arm to pull us up, patient instruction on where to put our hands and feet to maneuver the tricky parts and good humor to keep us going. I would highly recommend ROAM-Escalante and tour guide Regan for a “bucket list” experience thru the amazing slot canyons of Escalante!

The greatest hiking experience we’ve had to date! - The best way do hike these canyons is with an experienced tour guide. We were lucky to have Neil as our guide! We have moderate hiking experience and Neil made us feel safe and confident through even the most challenging areas. He has a great personality and shared his enthusiasm and knowledge of the area which added to our overall experience.

THIS IS A MUST DO TRIP! YOU WON'T REGRET IT. - What a fantastic experience. Regan was our guide. The ride out to the start point was a crazy bumpy dirt road, Regan gave us some of the history and geology of the Grand Staircase on the ride out and we all got to know each other a little better as well. The walk out to the canyons were gradual downhill, and some more conversation about the geology and natural history of the area. The canyons were amazing and Regan was very upbeat and excited to lead us through our first experience doing this. In Dry Fork, along the way he showed us some techniques to use when navigating various types of terrain in the canyons. Peekaboo was our first challenge, but Regan was very encouraging. There was some low level water along the way, but Regan was very adaptable to the situation as we navigated our way up the canyon. He was very enthusiastic, and put confidence was boosted as we moved along. It was challenging, in a good way, and so much fun. Spooky was also a great experience, and Regan once again was so encouraging along the way. I cannot overstate how much fun this was. You will not regret doing this.

OUTSTANDING Multi Slot Canyons Tour with Roam Adventures - I did this Outstanding “Trio” Tour with Roam Adventures in late April on a beautiful morning. The tour involved a nice ride in an air-conditioned Jeep down Hole-in-the-Rock Road to the trail head. Only two guests on this ~4-hour adventure on the scheduled day. Our tour guide Neal was amazing. His knowledge of the area and willingness to share info and answer questions made this tour so much better. Several generations of Neal’s family are from this area and his knowledge of Escalante history / culture and local Fauna & Flora adds so much value to the hike. This tour actually involves three slot canyons Dry Gulch Narrows (a nice slot you do on the way in and again on the way out), Spooky Slot Canyon, and Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon. This is an unbelievable adventure through tall, tight, twisty slots. Neal was invaluable in picking the best direction and helping us over and around obstacles and short climbs / descents. Some areas are so tight the hiker must remove packs and turn sideways to navigate through. Makes for fantastic photos and an unforgettable adventure. One of my favorite areas was “The Cheese Grater” where the slot narrows down to 10 -12 inches. I scraped up my hiking pants a bit in this area but would not trade this adventure for anything. Anyone in reasonably good shape can do this tour. (Spoken from a 72 year old’s perspective :-) ) DO NOT HESITATE to book this Outstanding tour with Roam Adventures. Ask for Neal as a tour guide as he made this ½ day adventure incredible. Dan Murphy, Old Bridge, NJ
