Additional Information

How would you characterize Vienna - the epicenter of arts and culture? The origin of the waltz? The cradle of psychoanalysis? All these and more underscore the uniqueness of this Austrian city.

Belvedere’s Genius Loci (spirit of place) is enriched with intricate details that distinctly represent Austria and Vienna. Want to explore what art pieces from varied eras articulate about the distinct Viennese identity? I invite you to embark on a journey through the halls of Belvedere, gaining an understanding of the national psyche.

By examining Gustav Klimt’s iconic ‘Judith’ and ‘The Kiss’ we can understand why female sensuality garnered medical curiosity in Vienna. Similarly, the haunting aura of Egon Schiele’s ‘Embrace’ and ‘The Girl and Death’ shed light on why this city is the birthplace of psychoanalysis.

The intricate baroque embellishments of the palace, complemented by the emphasis on heroic themes of yore, encapsulate the imperial aura that imbues the city, influencing both the residents and tourists. And Ferdinand Waldmüller’s lucid artwork exhibits the renowned ‘Viennese comfort’, requiring a discerning gaze to uncover the hidden tragedies beneath these widely-promoted scenes.

Amid the gilded medieval altars and Klimt’s golden masterpieces, there’s a spark of wit and intellect that flickers from the sobering art of Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. What makes the illustrious collection of this palace dazzle? And what reveals the true face of this erstwhile imperial capital? The answers lie within the gallery walls of the Belvedere Palace.

Fascinating and memorable - Julia was amazing. My husband who has less interest in art was as fascinated as I was and we referred to things Julia told us as we visited other places in Vienna. She guided us through the Belvedere and built a story starting with the middle ages all the way to Klimt, she wove a thread connecting many of the works of art. I was as impressed with her knowledge and passion about art and history as I was with the actual paintings. I was hesitant to buy a tour so pricey as this but it was well worth the money spent.

Belvedere Palace art tour - Our guide was terrific! She was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I learned many things about art history that will make me look at historical paintings in a new light and feel I have a better appreciation of the importance of context in any piece of art.

First visit to Vienna. - This was our highlight activity in Vienna. The Belvedere Palace/Gallery and gardens are beautiful just to see it. Their art collection is great. A must see while in Vienna. Julia, our tour guide was the greatest part of our tour. She was very knowledgeable, easy going and fun to listening too. With her assistance, you will be able to learn not only about art but also social and political issues of the Austrian society. We really enjoyed this activity and highly recommended.

An absolute masterclass &... - An absolute masterclass & a must do in Vienna. My wife and I enjoyed an exclusive private tour of almost 3 hours with Julia in the Belvedere. We learned not only about the art in the museum, but the historical context for Vienna and Austria as a whole. We did this on our last day in the city & were glad of that as we had a better perspective having already been in town for a week. This tour is not inexpensive, but worth every cent for those who have a curiosity about art, architecture and history.

Excellent tour! - Julia was great. She provided us with an excellent overview and history of the palace and plenty of the exhibits. But not just that. She wove an emotional narrative connecting the various pieces bringing greater meaning to it all. The tour felt as though we had an expert art historian friend guiding us through the Belvedere. It couldn't have been better!

JULIA IS A REAL GEM - We planned Vienna museums trips with Julia for 3 days in a row and if she would be available for another 2 days we would happily spend 2 more days with her. Julia’s tours are inspired enlightening and very engaging. She is absolutely one of a kind - extremely deep and knowledgeable yet she doesn’t bring you down on the contrary she elevates you to her level. This was our second time walking through museums of Vienna with Julia and we will absolutely be back for more. Touring art with Julia is like reading an amazing book where thoughts and guesses are illustrated with worlds most beloved and important paintings. Except you are looking at them on walls of palaces not on the book pages. Whatever your art interests are I promise you Julia will have the most interesting tour for you - all you need to do is ask.

Incredible art tour with many "Aha!" moments - I booked this tour by the recommendation of friends of mine who had been to Vienna six months earlier and told me " This is a must." And I am so very grateful! This Belvedere tour was by far the most engaging and inspiring I have ever had. Julia carefully wove together political, cultural, and psychological aspects of art and made every minute of our tour a genuine pleasure. Thus I can confirm "This is a must-do in Vienna."
