Embark on a journey with us to our most loved destination, Mou Waho Island, situated on Lake Wanaka. Experience the uniqueness of an island in a lake, on an island, in another lake, on an island in the sea! Mou Waho Island, a protected nature reserve, is the habitat of numerous native birds of New Zealand, including the intriguing flightless Weka. A brief hike will lead you to the island’s summit, where you’ll witness the stunning panoramic views of the Arethusa pool, Lake Wanaka and its encompassing mountain peaks.
Our water taxi departs from Wanaka Marina bi-daily, covers a distance of 15km across Lake Wanaka, bypasses Mou Tapu Island and the vertical cliff of fisherman’s cove before reaching Mou Waho Island. During the journey on the crystal clear waters, the amiable and well-versed skipper will enlighten you about the interesting geology of the alps and the glaciers that formed the lake.
The trip includes a 1.5 hour independent exploration walk on the island.
