- Oedo - Begin your journey from a hotel in Busan and head to Oedo-Botania, a marine botanical garden situated in Hallyeo Maritime National Park. This garden offers stunning views of the crystal-clear South Sea and its surrounding landscapes. Located 4 kilometers from Geojedo Island, it is a 20-minute boat ride from Gujora Port, passing Naedo Island to reach the European-like Oedo Island. In 1969, Lee Chang-ho first arrived on this island to seek refuge from the wind and waves while fishing. Over 30 years, he and his wife meticulously crafted this breathtaking landscape.
In April, the island blooms with a variety of flowers. The Venus Garden features twelve sculptures and a western-style garden. At Paradise Lounge, visitors can enjoy the sunshine and sea while sipping beverages. Oedo is home to camellias and various rare flowers from around the world. Descending the ‘Stairway to Heaven,’ visitors can admire the beautiful garden with the ocean as a backdrop. Magnificent terrace landscaping lines both sides of the stairway. Oedo Paradise Island is truly a paradise.
- Haegeumgang Theme Park - One of the top attractions on Geojedo Island, Geoje Haegeumgang River is often referred to as the Geumgang River (Sea Diamond) of the South Sea. This rock island is part of Hallyeo Marine National Park, designated as an official green area in South Korea. Originally named Galgotdo due to its resemblance to the spreading roots of arrowroot, it is now known as Haegeumgang River, meaning Geumgangsan Mountain in the sea.
The most breathtaking views of Haegeumgang River are during sunset and sunrise, best seen from Ilwollbong Peak or Lion Rock. In the center of Haegeumgang River lies Shipjagul Cave, which stretches 100m from east to west and 180m from south to north.
- Tongyeong - Next, head to Tongyeong, known to locals as the ‘Napoli of Asia,’ with its numerous harborside hotels, cafes, and shops. Renowned across Korea for its seafood, especially oysters, it is a popular holiday destination for Koreans.
Experience the Tongyeong Cable Car & Skywalk - The panoramic view of Tongyeong from the cable car is unparalleled! Departing for the peak of Mireuksan Mountain at 461 meters above sea level, the cable car is the longest in Korea, spanning 1,975 meters! The height offers a thrilling experience, while the length allows riders to fully appreciate the stunning views from every angle. Upon reaching the summit, step out onto the skywalk if you dare. The panorama includes all of downtown Tongyeong and Geojedaegyo Bridge. The boats navigating the harbor resemble the many islands, both large and small, dotting the sea. From this vantage point, it’s clear why Tongyeong is called the “Napoli of Asia.”
- Dongpirang Village - Dongpirang Mural Villages are a major reason why Tongyeong is a great cultural destination today. These two neighborhoods are located to the east and west of Tongyeong Jungang Market. Built on a steep slope and once an eyesore due to disrepair, Dongpirang Village was slated for demolition. The residents opposed this and, with the help of volunteers, transformed their neighborhood with whimsical murals. It quickly became a popular attraction, and Seopirang soon followed suit.
The murals in Dongpirang Village were created by amateur artists, giving the village a friendly, approachable atmosphere. The love each artist had for the village is evident in the styles and colors they chose.
- Yi Sun-shin Park - Yi Sun-sin Park is dedicated to Admiral Yi, who defended against Japanese forces during the Imjin War (1592-1598). Visitors can still feel his protective presence by viewing the 17.3-meter-tall bronze statue of Admiral Yi gazing out to sea. The park is near Tongyeong Harbor, offering views of the port, fishery market, and Dongpirang Village. For a break from the city, follow the park’s boardwalk. The numerous sculptures along the way create excellent photo opportunities, and the ocean breeze will refresh your spirit.
- Tongyeong Jungang Market - Located close to the coastline, this market offers a wide variety of fresh and dried fish. Visitors can also find mother-of-pearl inlaid wares, quilted products, and rice cakes.
Exploring local attractions is wonderful, but tasting regional food is equally important! Some of Tongyeong’s specialties include Chungmu-style gimbap, uzza (noodles in udon broth and black bean sauce), honey bread, and ppaeddaegi juk (porridge made from dried sweet potato). Chungmu-style gimbap is a simple version of the classic gimbap, with just white rice wrapped in seaweed; it pairs well with seokbakji (radish kimchi) and ojingeo eomuk muchim (spicy squid salad). Uzza, combining udon with jajangmyeon, offers a unique taste special to Tongyeong! For gifts, Tongyeong honey bread is an excellent choice! This fried bun with red bean filling is coated in honey. All these local delicacies can be found around Tongyeong Jungang Market, so be sure to include a visit in your itinerary!
