GIZA PYRAMIDS MEMPHIS CITY AND SAKKARA PYRAMID DAY TOUR

Pyramids of Giza - Your tour guide will pick you up from your hotel in Cairo or Giza to start your full-day tour of the Giza Pyramids. The Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx are some of the world’s most famous tourist attractions, having been popular even during Roman times. These magnificent structures served as the tombs for kings of the 4th Dynasty (c.2613–2494 BC). The Great Pyramid of Giza was built for King Khufu (c.2589–2566 BC), with the other two pyramids constructed for his son Khafre and grandson Menkaure. Khufu’s pyramid is the oldest and largest, and it remained the tallest man-made structure for 3,800 years.

While the three pyramids dominate the landscape, they are surrounded by many other monuments. Each king’s pyramid was part of a larger complex that included smaller queens’ pyramids and a secondary symbolic tomb for the king.

Saqqara (Sakkara) Pyramids - Next, you will be transferred to Saqqara, located 40 km southwest of Cairo. Saqqara is one of the most significant cemeteries of Memphis, an important city in ancient Egyptian history. The site is named after the god Sokar.

Saqqara is an open-air museum showcasing all of ancient Egyptian history. Kings and noblemen from the first two dynasties (c.3040–2686 BC) were buried here, including the Step Pyramid of Djoser (c.2686–2667 BC). The pyramids of notable kings from the Old Kingdom Fifth (c.2494–2345 BC) and Sixth (c.2345–2181 BC) Dynasties are also found here. The pyramid of Unas (c.2375–2345 BC) features the oldest pyramid burial chamber decorated with texts, known as the Pyramid Texts, intended to protect the king in the afterlife.

Memphis - Memphis, or Men-nefer, was the ancient capital of Inebu-hedj, the first nome of Lower Egypt. Its ruins are near the modern village of Mit Rahina in Giza, Egypt. The name likely comes from the late Ancient Egyptian name for Memphis, mjt-rhnt, meaning “Road of the Ram-Headed Sphinxes”.

The pyramid fields, including the famous Pyramids of Giza, stretch over a desert plateau for more than 30 kilometers (19 miles) and are listed as the World Heritage Site Memphis and its Necropolis. The site is open to the public as an open-air museum.

According to legends from the early third century BC by Manetho, a priest and historian from the Ptolemaic Kingdom, the city was founded by King Menes.

At the end of the tour, you will be transferred back to your hotel.
