Highlights

Broome to Windjana Gorge

Windjana Gorge - Departing Broome, we head to Derby to visit the Norval Art Gallery, where you can admire exquisite artworks and learn about the area’s traditional art history. Our next stop is Tunnel Creek, which flows through a tunnel beneath the limestone of the Napier Range. Tunnel Creek is part of the 350-375 million-year-old Devonian Reef, formed when the Kimberley was covered by the sea and gradually exposed as sea levels fell. We then proceed to Windjana Gorge, a stunning gorge carved through the Napier Range, holding special significance to the local Aboriginal people. The gorge, formed by the Lennard River, is 3.5 km long. We will walk up the gorge before setting up camp for the night.

Windjana Gorge to Silent Grove (Bell Gorge)

Bell Gorge - After rejoining the Gibb River Road, we head north to begin our hike of Bell Gorge, one of the most impressive gorges in the Kimberley, eroded into the King Leopold Range. Bell Creek cascades through a series of falls and pools, offering plenty of time for a refreshing swim before we return to Silent Grove for the night.

Silent Grove to Mt Barnett (Manning Gorge)

Manning Gorge

Manning Gorge - A relaxing day with a hike to Manning Falls for a swim, returning around lunchtime. The afternoon is spent leisurely along the banks of the Barnett River and camp, soaking in the atmosphere before relaxing around the campfire.

Mt Barnett to Munurru (King Edward River)

Mitchell Plateau

Mitchell Falls - Today, we drive slowly and steadily along the Port Warrender Road to the Mitchell Plateau, showcasing 4WD terrain. Departing the camp, we arrive at the Mertens carpark mid-morning for a short scenic helicopter flight over the Mitchell Plateau and the incredible Mitchell Falls. The remarkable scenery offers a great perspective before exploring it on foot. After enjoying a swim at the top of the falls, we hike 3.5 km back to the carpark, stopping to view some Aboriginal Rock Art along the way. We return to camp in the late afternoon.

Munurru to El Questro

El Questro Wilderness Park - Today is one of our longest drive days due to limited overnight options. We rejoin the Gibb River Road, stopping at Ellenbrae Station to meet the hosts and enjoy afternoon tea. Along the way, we are treated to fabulous views of the Kimberley and Cockburn Range. We continue along the Gibb River Road to our evening destination, El Questro Wilderness Park.

El Questro

El Questro Wilderness Park - Today, we explore the beauty of El Questro Wilderness Park, starting with a swim in the magnificent Thermal Pools of Zebedee Springs, followed by a 1.2 km hike into Emma Gorge in the heart of the Cockburn Ranges. After the hike, we enjoy lunch before heading to one of the most spectacular sunset views in the Kimberley for drinks and appetizers.

El Questro

El Questro Wilderness Park - After a leisurely start, we hike into El Questro Gorge to the halfway pool. There is also an option to relax at camp. After lunch, the afternoon is free to relax, join an optional Chamberlain Gorge cruise (must be booked in advance), and catch up on washing.

El Questro to Kununurra

Kununurra - Today, we visit the historical town of Wyndham, the 5 Rivers lookout, and the museum before heading to Parry Creek Farm for lunch. After lunch, we head towards Kununurra, stopping at Ivanhoe Crossing, The Hoochery, and Sandalwood Factory. Our camp for the next two nights is at Kimberleyland on the banks of Lake Kununurra.

Ord River, Lake Argyle, Kununurra

Ord River - After breakfast, we walk through town to visit art galleries and check out the Argyle diamonds before joining a ¾ day boat cruise of the Ord River. The cruise covers 55 km of river between Kununurra and Lake Argyle, showcasing an ecological system developed from the damming of the Ord River. The tour concludes with a scenic coach tour through ‘Durack Country’ to Lake Argyle before returning to Kununurra.

Kununurra to Purnululu National Park

Purnululu National Park - Today, we drive into the magnificent World Heritage Listed Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungles), renowned for its striking orange and grey horizontal banded domes. These distinctive beehive-shaped landforms have been formed by uplift and erosion over the last 20 million years. In the evening, we will watch the sunset behind the Bungle Bungle Ranges while enjoying a glass of Champagne before returning to our campsite.

Purnululu National Park

Purnululu National Park - After breakfast, we spend the day exploring the magnificent beehive formations of this World Heritage Listed region, including hikes into Echidna Chasm, Cathedral Gorge, and Piccaninny Creek Lookout. The area was largely ‘undiscovered’ until 1982, known only to local Aboriginal people and a few stockmen. It became a National Park in 1987. An unforgettable helicopter flight over the Bungles is highly recommended and available at an extra cost (must be booked in advance).

Purnululu National Park to Fitzroy Crossing

Fitzroy Crossing - Leaving Purnululu, we head to Halls Creek for morning tea and refreshments. We travel along the Great Northern Highway to Fitzroy Crossing, stopping for lunch and enjoying the views. Our evening destination is the Fitzroy River Lodge, a beautiful oasis along the riverbanks, where you can take a short evening walk.

Fitzroy Crossing to Broome

Geikie Gorge National Park - On the final day, we take a boat tour down the Fitzroy River through Geikie Gorge, offering marvellous views and photo opportunities. We return to Broome in the late afternoon and bid farewell as we drop you off at your pre-arranged accommodation.

15 (+ 2) Day Kimberley Ultimate Private Camping tour - Recipe for a perfect Kimberley tour 1/ forge agreement with a group of friends (11+) to a private tour with Outback Horizons. Allows you to tailor the tour to the group's preferences 2/ having done your own research, liaise with Bryce and carefully consider his suggestions - he has tested many variations of undertaking The Gibb and knows his stuff - this includes minimising of one night stays and not trying to cram everything into one trip, while also doing justice to the most epic locations, e.g. very glad we were persuaded to spend 3 nights at both Purnululu (Bungles) and El Questro 3/ apply YOLO principles to the expense – once you’re on the trip and understand what you’re getting for your money, it is great value 4/ throw in Clancy and Steve as your driver/guides/chefs - join local boy/man Clancy in bombing competitions off rocks, but also observe him adroitly managing group dynamics; always with humour - while Steve is not as funny as Clancy (sorry Steve), he has a great depth and breadth of knowledge of the natural and cultural features of the Kimberley; both are very respectful of culture and country 5/ add wonderful guest guides at key times – at Purnululu, aboriginal guide Bec had us amused and enthralled, and also touched our hearts 6/ have Bryce behind the scenes pre-empting and mitigating external provider errors, minimising any inconvenience – extraordinarily responsive and effective 7/ then submit to the magic of the Kimberley

Absoutely Fabulous - We recently enjoyed a fabulous guided tour of the Kimberley's with Outback Horizons. It was the best way to see this remote part of Australia with everything taken care of, all we had to do was enjoy the amazing places we were taken to see. Steve our wonderful guide shared his love and passion for the area and went above and beyond to make sure we were safe and happy. This was one of the best holidays we have ever taken and we are forever grateful to Bryce and his team for providing such a fantastic experience. Highly recommend Outback Horizons.
