Thermopylae & Meteora

Thermopylae - We will pick you up from your hotel in Athens.

Drive to Thermopylae

Thermopylae is a historic location in Greece known for its narrow coastal passage in ancient times. The Battle of Thermopylae was fought here between a coalition of Greek city-states, led by King Leonidas of Sparta, and the Persian Empire under Xerxes.

The Gates of Fire: Named after the hot sulfur springs and, in Greek mythology, the cavernous entrances to Hades.

The monument of King Leonidas: This monument, erected in 1955 and crafted by sculptor Vasos Falireas, features a stunning brass sculpture of the Spartan King with his spear and shield.

Thermopylae museum: This innovative museum is dedicated to the 480 BC battle that significantly influenced Greek history and Western civilization.

Hotsprings: The baths of Thermopylae are a haven of healing spas. These high-end hydrotherapy facilities focus on balneotherapy, not only as a treatment for specific ailments, illnesses, and injuries but also to promote overall well-being. Of the 60 pending springs, 34 have been officially recognized so far.

Additional Information

We start our journey at the historical location of Thermopylae. Honouring King Leonidas of Sparta and his powerful Spartan soldiers, we’ll explore the stunning statue monument dedicated to him, which is incredibly captivating!

We then move on to the awe-inspiring Meteora! Known as one of Greece’s most picturesque regions, Meteora’s hanging monasteries are amongst the most unique sights in the country.

These monasteries are poised on towering sandstone formations, which for countless years offered completely unreachable sanctuaries for monks. Constructed atop these rock towers, they offer mesmerising views over the span of the plain.

In addition to the breathtaking panoramas, the Meteora Monasteries are home to numerous religious artefacts, murals, iconography, and libraries rich in ancient texts. Daily, visitors from all around the globe flock here for reflection and prayer. The striking landscape was also the backdrop for filming sequences in the Bond movie “For Your Eyes Only” (Holy Trinity Monastery).

  • When visiting temples, religious sites, or official buildings, it is advisable for visitors to dress in attire that is not sleeveless, does not include shorts, short skirts, or revealing clothing.

Fun time at Meteora - We loved the tour very much. Our guide Tas was very knowledgeable and allowed us to really take in the experience. We had enough time to enjoy landscape, sights, and food. He was great in explaining everything to us. He also took great pictures of us and described each of them. I would highly recommend this tour.

Two days in Delphi and Meteora - My daughter and I spent a fantastic two days exploring Delphi and Meteora. We couldn't have done it without our extremely friendly, knowledgeable and fun guide, Tas. He took such good care of us! We felt like we were family and he made sure we ate at the best tavernas (and got the best seat in the house with view of the Gulf of Corinth at the Taverna To Patriko Mas). Next time we're in Greece we will do another tour with Tas and Ancient Greece Tours!
