Wae Rebo is primarily known for its distinctive houses, referred to as Mbaru Niang. These structures are tall, cone-shaped, and entirely draped in lontar thatch from the top to the bottom. It seems these types of dwellings were once prevalent in the area. However, nowadays, this village is the only one that perseveres in preserving the signature Manggarai traditional home; otherwise, these unique houses would have entirely vanished.
The village is entirely enclosed by scenic mountains and the thick Todo forest. This lush forest teems with flora, including orchids and various ferns, and the constant sound of distinctive bird songs.
