Golden Circle
Thingvellir National Park - This is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are drifting apart. Few places on Earth provide such a clear view of this significant geological activity. Thingvellir National Park also boasts Iceland’s largest natural lake, home to diverse fish and bird species. Historically, Thingvellir is significant as the site where Icelanders established their parliament in 930 A.D., with chieftains gathering annually. The name “Thingvellir” means “Parliament Plains.”
Gullfoss Waterfall - The meltwater from Langjökull, Iceland’s second-largest glacier, cascades into a deep canyon, creating the stunning “Golden Falls.” On sunny days, Langjökull is visible in the distance, and a rainbow often appears in the waterfall’s mist, making it a perfect Instagram moment!
Geysir - The Geysir geothermal area features numerous colorful hot springs and two erupting geysers. “Geysir,” the namesake of all geysers worldwide, rarely erupts today. “Strokkur,” however, erupts every 5 minutes, reaching heights of up to 40 meters.
South Coast, Blue Ice Cave and Glacier Hike
Seljalandsfoss - The adventure begins with a comfortable minibus ride from Reykjavík to the South. The powerful Seljalandsfoss announces our arrival. Bring a raincoat for the short hike behind the falls. The view and the ground’s tremor from the waterfall’s power create an unforgettable Instagram moment!
Skogafoss - Further east is the picturesque Skógafoss waterfall. Nestled in a gorge, the Skógá river plunges 60 meters before flowing towards the Atlantic Ocean. A staircase alongside the gorge leads to a vantage point above the waterfall for breathtaking views. Try counting your steps on the way up.
Skaftafell National Park - Embark on a glacier hike on an outlet glacier from Vatnajökull, one of the country’s largest glaciers. After meeting expert glacier guides and gearing up with helmets, harnesses, crampons, and ice axes, enjoy a 90-minute hike on the ice. This remarkable experience offers insight into this awe-inspiring and increasingly rare natural wonder. Skaftafell has been a filming location for popular TV shows and movies like Game of Thrones, Interstellar, and James Bond. Follow in the footsteps of your favorite characters!
The journey continues with an exploration of a blue ice cave. The short hike to the cave requires waterproof hiking boots with ankle support and sturdy soles. Iceland’s glaciers can only be explored with certified guides and safety gear. Your guide will share their knowledge of the ice caves, enhancing your appreciation of this incredible natural phenomenon – spoiler alert… it’s blue.
South Coast Glacier Lagoon and The Black Sand Beach
Glacier Lagoon - Day 3 begins at Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, a 200m deep lagoon fed by Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of Europe’s largest glacier. Massive icebergs from Breiðamerkurjökull fill the lagoon year-round, floating south. Stroll along the glacier lagoon to enjoy the breathtaking views and the serene silence of Icelandic nature. Before returning, hop on a super jeep to visit a blue ice cave in the glacier.
Fellsfjara - Across the road, icebergs from Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon drift into the Atlantic Ocean, only to be swiftly returned to shore by tides and winds. This black sand beach is adorned with smaller ice rocks of various shapes and sizes, sparkling like diamonds in the daylight. The ice, in shades of white and blue, creates stunning contrasts, perfect for making your Instagram account shine!
Reynisfjara Beach - Further east, visit the black sand beach of Reynisfjara, where massive waves crash against unique basalt columns in the cliffs above the sand. Rock pillars in the water and the cliffs of Dýrhólaey are visible in the distance. This southern area is a haven for bird enthusiasts, with puffins and numerous other unique species nesting on these cliffs from June to August.
