Bayon Temple - The Bayon, or state temple of Jayavarman VII, is one of the most mysterious and spiritually significant structures in the world. It features a unique collection of “face towers” that form a stone mountain of rising peaks. Originally, there were 49 towers, 37 of which still stand today. Most towers are adorned with four faces, one on each cardinal point, while the central tower boasts many more.

Terrace of the Elephants - Located at the heart of Angkor Thom, the Elephant Terrace overlooks the Royal Square. It marks the entrance to the Royal Palace and was the focal point for royal receptions. The carvings of elephants along its wall give it its modern name.

Terrace of the Leper King - This grand terrace is named after a 15th-century sculpture found atop it. Likely dating back to the reign of Jayavarman VII, it has been restored to allow visitors to explore its various layers, from the earliest to the most recent additions. Ta Prohm Temple is a jungle temple.

Ta Prohm - Built in the 12th century by Jayavarman VII as a royal monastery dedicated to his mother, Ta Prohm was left in its natural state to show how most of Angkor looked upon its rediscovery in the 18th century. Enveloped by jungle, Ta Prohm exudes a romantic aura with its massive roots and branches intertwined with the stone walls, forming a natural roof over the man-made structures.

Angkor Wat - Afternoon

The City of Angkor is one of the grandest monuments ever built, covering approximately 164 square miles with over 200 temples. Among the 30 accessible temples, Angkor Wat is the most famous and is the largest religious building in the world, with a volume of stone comparable to the Cheops pyramid in Egypt. Conceived by Suryavarman II in the early 12th century, Angkor Wat took an estimated 30 years to build. Unlike most other Khmer temples, it faces west, likely because it was dedicated to Vishnu, who is sometimes associated with the West.

Phnom Bakheng - Bakeng Mountain offers the best sunset views. In the late 9th century, it was the state temple of Angkor’s first capital. Begin the ascent from the east side at the foot of the hill near the road. The view from the top is magnificent, especially of Angkor Wat to the southeast, making it a popular spot for tourists.

Angkor Wat - 05:00, depart for a beautiful sunrise tour at Angkor Wat. In the morning, continue your temple visit to Banteay Srei Temple. (Option available if you prefer not to wake up early.)

Banteay Srei - Banteay Srei Temple is the most exquisite in the complex. Known as the “Citadel of Women” or “Citadel of Beauty,” it is noted for its size and delicate decorations. Unlike the major sites at Angkor, Banteay Srei was not a royal temple but was built by Brahmin priests. Often described as the “Jewel of Khmer Art,” its miniature scale and nearly complete decoration surprise visitors. The innermost spaces of the temple are closed to the public for protection.

Eastern Mebon - Constructed in 952 AD by King Rajendravarman II, the East Mebon Temple was dedicated to his parents and the Hindu Trinity Gods. The temple, known as ‘Magic Merits’ in Cambodian, was built on the island of Yasotatska (Eastern Baray or reservoir). At that time, people reached the temple by boat.

Ta Som - Built by King Jayavarman VII (1181-1220) to honor his older sister, Ta Som is smaller than other temples dedicated to more important figures. It is one of three temples constructed by Jayavarman VII, located across the lake Jayatataka.

Neak Pean - ‘Neak Pean’ means ‘Nagas Intertwining Tails’ in Khmer, named for the two Nagas (one male and one female) whose bodies encircle the temple base with their tails intertwined. This symbolizes their union and happiness.

Preah Khan - Built in the 12th century, Preah Khan was one of Jayavarman VII’s largest projects, dedicated to his father. It served as a Buddhist university and a significant city with over 1,000 teachers. You can walk through Preah Khan from east to west or vice versa, admiring the magnificent stone sculptures of giant garudas holding the tails of nagas. The World Monuments Fund, a US-based foundation, is currently restoring Preah Khan.

Bakong - Starting at 08:00 or 08:30, visit Bakong Temple, located south of Preah Ko in the Roluos Group. Enter and exit the temple from the east. A modern Buddhist temple is situated near the east entrance. Built in the late 9th century (881) by King Indravarman I and dedicated to Shiva, Bakong follows the Preah Ko art style.

Preah Ko - Preah Ko was the first temple built in the ancient city of Hariharalaya (now called Roluos), about 15 kilometers southeast of the main Angkor temples. Built in 879 by Khmer King Indravarman I, it honors the king’s family and places them in relation to the Hindu deity Shiva.

Lolei - Similar to the Mebon of the eastern baray, Lolei temple was built on an island in the middle of the Indratataka reservoir. The reservoir, measuring 3,800 meters east-west by 800 meters north-south, was excavated to provide water to the capital city (Hariharalaya) and irrigate the surrounding plains. The temple was dedicated to Indravarmesvara in memory of Yasovarman’s father and served as the foundation for a series of identical hermitages ordered by the king.

Kompong Phluk - Located on the Tonle Sap, the largest lake in Southeast Asia and a UNESCO Biosphere site, Kompong Phluk is crucial to Cambodians who live on it and earn their living from fishing. The lake and river system is vital for its ecology and endangered flora and fauna.
