Petit Socco - Within the Medina, you’ll stop at this historic square, locally known as Souk Dakhel. It was once home to many notable writers like Paul Bowles, Jean Genet, Tennessee Williams, and Mohamed Choukri. Today, the freshly painted facades of its Hispano-Moorish buildings attract tourists, making it a wonderful spot for people-watching over a mint tea.

Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen - Founded in 1471 as a small Kasbah (fortress) by Moulay Ali Ibn Rashid Al-Alami, a descendant of Abd As-Salam al-Alami and Idris I, and through them, of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Al-Alami established the city to combat Portuguese invasions in northern Morocco. Alongside the Ghomara tribes, many Moriscos and Jews settled here after the Spanish Reconquista (Inquisition) in medieval times. The city’s blue palette originates from this era, as Jewish exiles painted their houses blue to reflect their divinity—a tradition that has continued through the centuries. Recently, the blue shades have spread from the Jewish quarter (the Mellah) to other parts of the Medina, making it the “blue pearl of Morocco” we know today.

Chefchaouen Medina - Chefchaouen has become one of the world’s most picturesque destinations. Its Medina is enchanting, with winding alleys painted in every shade of blue imaginable. Bab EL Ain - Bab El Ain is one of the main gateways into the historic 15th-century Medina of Chefchaouen. Located on the southern side of the Medina, near a large cemetery, its imposing terracotta-colored stone façade features a relatively small archway and small windows in the upper section.

Place Outa el Hammam - Every town has its central square, and Chefchaouen is no exception. Plaza Outa El-Hammam exudes a blend of Moroccan and Spanish influences, evident in the fantastic food available from street vendors and restaurants. The name means “The flat ground where the Hammam is,” referencing the nearby Hammam, Great Mosque, and Kasbah. It’s a great spot to relax and admire the majestic mountains overlooking the city.

Kasbah Museum - Located next to the Great Mosque, the Kasbah features the beautiful Andalusian Garden, a tranquil green oasis complementing the town’s blue hues. The Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen, known as the Kasbah Museum, houses an unrivaled collection of artifacts that tell the story of the region, from pottery to musical instruments. There’s even a small art gallery within the museum. A visit here is essential to understand the history and culture of Chefchaouen.

Grand Mosque - Built in the 15th century by the son of the city’s founder, Chefchaouen’s Grand Mosque features an unusual octagonal minaret influenced by Andalusian styles brought by Muslims from Spain. The mosque’s stone construction, in shades of brown and beige, contrasts with the nearby blue and white buildings. Admiring the mosque is a top activity in Chefchaouen.

Ras El Maa Waterfall - Translating to “head of the water,” this spot marks where fresh mountain water flows into the town, serving as a popular gathering place for locals. These falls offer a refreshing escape from the heat and a glimpse into daily life, as locals gather to wash clothes and socialize. The thundering water also powers mills (Rhas) along the stream.

Spanish Mosque - After a delicious Chaouni lunch, your tour guide will take you to the Spanish Mosque, or Bouzafaar Mosque, for a wonderful view over Chefchaouen from an outside terrace. Located 650 meters from Ras El-Ma, the Spanish Mosque sits on a hilltop, offering a terrific vantage point to admire the surroundings. Built in the 1920s by the Spanish, it never attracted local worshippers and fell into disrepair before being restored. As a non-working mosque, all visitors can peek inside. It is also called Boujaafar Mosque, named after the Spanish official who oversaw its construction and had a notably large mustache. This marks the end of your Chefchaouen tour, leaving you with free time for more photos before heading back to Tangier.

Tetouan

Feddan Park Tetouan - Start your visit at Feddan Park, where you can see the white medina. From there, walk to Moulay El Mehdi Square, where the bell of a Catholic church still chimes. Stroll through the area, enjoying the well-preserved colonial facades of the royal palace. Everything in Tetouan is painted white and green.

Medina of Tetouan - The royal palace is located in the beautiful Hassan II Square, adorned with modernist columns by a disciple of Gaudi residing in Melilla. One of the entrance doors to the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is here. The medina is a hidden gem, still authentic and filled with artisans at work. It’s best explored with a local guide to fully appreciate its main attractions without getting lost.

Tanneries of Tetouan - One of the medina’s attractions is its old leather tanneries, where artisans continue the traditional craft of making leather goods.
