The first Buddha images were created here over 2000 years ago, with subsequent kings adding and enhancing the cave art over the centuries.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - This golden-roofed temple houses Sri Lanka’s most revered Buddhist relic – a tooth of the Buddha. During puja (offerings or prayers), the heavily guarded room containing the tooth is accessible to devotees and tourists. However, the tooth itself is not visible as it is kept in a gold casket shaped like a dagoba (stupa), which contains a series of six diminishing dagoba caskets.

Attracting around 2 million local and international visitors annually, the gardens feature over 4000 plant species, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants, and palm trees, and are famed for their orchid collection and long, palm-lined pathways.
