Apartheid Museum, Soweto, Mandela House, and Constitutional Court and Prison

Apartheid Museum - This is South Africa’s most significant museum and a must-visit. Take your time to immerse yourself in the history of the Apartheid Era. There is no time limit. Entry Fee is R 150.

Soweto - A drive through Soweto provides a great overview of this renowned township.

Mandela House - Located on the famous Vilakazi Street in Soweto, this is the house where Mr. Mandela lived while in Johannesburg. It also serves as a good example of early 1900s housing. Vilakazi Street is the heart of Soweto, often filled with music and dancing. There are also excellent restaurants where you can enjoy a traditional meal. Entry to the house costs R 100.

Johannesburg - Constitutional Hill is home to the Constitutional Court, the highest court in South Africa. It also houses the Johannesburg Fort and Prison, where many political prisoners were held during the apartheid era. The prison and fort have been converted into fascinating museums.

Cradle Of Humankind - Maropeng Museum, Lion and Rhino Park Safari

Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve - A major attraction where visitors can see wild animals in their natural habitat. The wild dogs and White Lions are particularly popular and can be viewed from the comfort of the guide’s vehicle. There are also many other animals to see. Entrance is R 200 per person.

Maropeng Visitor Centre - Although the Sterkfontein caves are closed, the Maropeng Museum is a popular alternative. Owned by Witwatersrand University (WITS), this educational museum focuses on the development of humankind and includes information on the Cradle of Humankind and fossils. Prominent displays feature Mrs. Ples and Lucy, along with many artifacts and presentations on the human race, animals, and plants over millions of years. Entry cost is R 120.

Lesedi Cultural Village and Hartbeespoort Dam or Elephant Sanctuary

Lesedi Cultural Village - This village offers more than just a look at the kraals and homesteads of African people; it also provides a history of their culture, arts, and dancing. The visit begins with a drum routine that teaches you how to play African drums, followed by a movie on the history of Africans in South Africa. The village tour includes the Zulu, Xhosa, Ndebele, and Sotho tribes. The highlight is the dance routines and singing that follow the village tour, depicting the stories of African families and wars. The tour concludes with a late lunch featuring traditional food. The cost for an inclusive tour is R 550, or R 450 without lunch.

Hartbeespoort Dam - A local attraction where you can take a cable car to the top of the mountain for R 250, or visit the elephant sanctuary. Visitors are taken on a journey into the world of the African elephant, offering an unforgettable experience where you can touch, feed, and get to know these magnificent creatures. The Elephant Sanctuary is unique in that it allows visitors to walk hand-in-trunk with the elephants. Cost is R 1300.

Thanks Shane!!! - If you're going to Johannesburg, you've gotta book with Shane! He is kind, funny, knowledgeable and patient. My sister has mobility issues and he assisted her throughout the entire 4 days. He even helped me retrieve my cell phone I left in an Uber in Cape Town!! I'm prtetty sure I drove him crazy, but he kept a smile the entire time, LOL. If you don't see what you're looking for, he can customize a tour for you. Just hit him up!
