Morogoro Region - On the journey to Mikumi National Park, travelers will pass through the Morogoro region, one of Tanzania’s largest regions, spanning 70,624 square kilometers—similar in size to Ireland. Morogoro is home to Mikumi National Park and the impressive Udzungwa Mountains, visible on the left when traveling from Dar es Salaam. These mountains rise majestically over Morogoro, providing a breathtaking scenic view.
Mikumi National Park - Located 33 km from Morogoro town, this remarkable park is approximately a 30-35 minute drive away. Mikumi National Park is celebrated for its diverse wildlife and beautiful landscapes. It covers around 3,230 square kilometers and is part of the larger Nyerere (Selous) ecosystem. Visitors to Mikumi can witness a wide variety of animals, including large herds of elephants, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, and wildebeests. Predators such as lions, leopards, and hyenas are also frequently spotted.
The park is home to some rare species, such as the African wild dog and the elusive eland. Bird lovers can enjoy spotting over 400 bird species, including the lilac-breasted roller, bateleur eagle, and the striking African fish eagle. Mikumi National Park offers a classic safari experience with its rich biodiversity and picturesque savannahs.
Mikumi National Park
Mikumi National Park - After an early breakfast, guests will embark on an exciting safari into the wilderness of Mikumi National Park. The early morning game drive provides the best opportunity to observe the park’s magnificent wildlife, as animals are more active before the day’s heat. With the guidance of expert guides, guests can see the “Big Four” (excluding the rhinoceros, which are not native to this area): lions, buffalo, elephants, and the elusive leopards, known for their solitary and nocturnal habits. Additionally, numerous hippos, which are plentiful in Mikumi, can be enjoyed.
After an exhilarating morning, guests can savor a delightful lunch in the heart of the wild.
Later in the day, guests will be transferred back to their hotel, where they can unwind with a hot dinner, take a refreshing bath, and relax in a warm, cozy environment for the night.
Transfer to Nyerere National Park
Nyerere National Park - After an early breakfast, the road trip to Nyerere National Park will commence. The journey, which includes both off-road and tarmac segments, will take approximately 7 hours. Arrival is expected in the late afternoon or evening, followed by a delightful dinner and a cozy overnight stay at the lodge.
Nyerere National Park (Full day game drive)
Nyerere National Park - After an early breakfast, the safari through the magnificent Nyerere National Park will begin. In addition to the Big Five, this park hosts a diverse range of wildlife, including about 1,300 African wild dogs, the largest concentration in Africa, as well as spotted hyenas, vervet monkeys, bushbucks, common elands, Coke’s hartebeests, waterbucks, and wildebeests.
Nyerere National Park also features a variety of bird species, such as the African spoonbill, Coqui francolin, Egyptian goose, and African fish eagle, among many others. Depending on preferences, guests can also enjoy a boat safari on the Rufiji River for an up-close look at marine life, including hippos and crocodiles. Every effort will be made to ensure guests experience as much of this wildlife as possible in the vast expanse of the park.
Guests will enjoy a packed lunch in the wilderness, and after an exciting day of wildlife viewing, they will be transferred to their lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Nyerere National Park to Dar es Salaam
Nyerere National Park - As this is the last day in the park, exploration time will be limited. However, there will still be an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the wildlife before being transferred back to Dar es Salaam.
