Lemosho Glades
Mount Kilimanjaro - From your lodge, we will head to the Londorosi gate on the western side of Mt. Kilimanjaro, which is a few hours’ drive from Arusha. Our hike will commence at the Lemosho trailhead.
Please be aware that in rainy or muddy conditions, vehicles may not reach the actual trailhead, necessitating some additional hiking. After a picnic lunch, we will hike for approximately 4 hours to the forest camp.
In the forest, you’ll be enchanted by exotic moss and flowers while bird calls provide a natural soundtrack. You might spot Black and White Colobus monkeys and signs of elephants that roam this area. We will spend the night at Forest Camp.
Hiking: 3-4 hours
Overnight Altitude: ~9,498’
Shira Plateau
Mount Kilimanjaro - As we exit the Montane Forest and enter the Hagenia zone, the views will open up, offering our first glimpses of the Kibo peak. This hike is excellent for acclimatization, as we traverse several ridges, reaching our highest point of the day at 11,500’ before descending to camp. We will overnight at Shira 1 Camp.
Hiking: 6-9 hours
Overnight Altitude: 11,500’
Moir Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - We will cross the Heath zone of the Shira Plateau and start ascending the western slope of the Kibo Massif. Along the way, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch at Scott Fisher memorial camp, named after the renowned Mt. Everest guide. We will then proceed to the upper heath zone and Moir camp. Weather permitting, acclimatization hikes can be arranged in the late afternoon.
Hiking: 5-6 hours
Overnight Altitude: ~13,650’
Barranco Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - Leaving the heath zone, we enter the alpine zone, hiking 4-6 hours past Lava Camp (up to about 14,300’) with its volcanic landscape, and then descend slightly into the picturesque Barranco Valley to camp.
Hiking: 4-6 hours
Overnight Altitude: ~13,044’
Karanga Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - We will ascend the Great Barranco Wall, offering views of Kilimanjaro’s ice fields, and then hike up and down across small valleys on our way to Karanga Camp.
Hiking: 3-5 hours
Overnight Altitude: ~13,106’
Barafu Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - We will hike for about 3-5 hours to Barafu Camp, again traversing small valleys with some ups and downs. After settling into camp, there will be a demonstration on the use of safety equipment such as the Gamow (hyperbolic) bag and oxygen. We will have an early supper and rest in camp before your wake-up call to start the summit ascent around 11:00 PM or midnight.
Hiking: 3-5 hours
Overnight Altitude: ~15,100’
Summit and Mweka Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - Summit day. We will begin our ascent to the summit (19,340ft – 5,896m) around 11:00 PM or midnight the previous night. The goal is to reach the peak at sunrise, although due to varying hiking speeds, energy levels, and altitude acclimatization, climbers typically reach the summit over several hours.
Using headlamps (bring extra lithium batteries, as they perform better in cold, dark conditions!), you will ascend for 6-7 hours to Stella Point and then another 1-2 hours to Uhuru Peak, the summit. After celebrating and taking photos at the summit, we will descend to Barafu camp for lunch and then continue to Mweka camp for an overnight stay.
Hiking: Highly variable for both ascent and descent; typically 12-17 hours
Summit: 19,341’
Overnight Altitude: 10,448’
Mweka Park Gate
Mount Kilimanjaro - Today, we make our final descent to the trailhead, which takes about 3-5 hours of hiking. We will have lunch and bid farewell to our mountain crew before departing Mount Kilimanjaro and heading back to town. You will usually arrive at your lodge between 3-5 PM.
