Arusha - Guests will be picked up at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to their hotel in Arusha town. They will meet their guide who will brief them on the upcoming trek and conduct an equipment check to ensure all necessary mountain gear is available. Any missing gear can be rented on this day.
The next day, a two-hour drive from Arusha to Machame Gate awaits, where park formalities are completed, the crew of porters is met, and the climb begins! The first section of the route ascends steadily through a magnificent, dense rainforest. This path is less frequented, so it can be somewhat overgrown in places and is often wet and muddy underfoot.
Distance covered: 10.8km / 6.7mi
Machame Camp (3010m) to Shira Camp (3845m)
Machame - The route continues upward through the forest until reaching the steep ascent onto the Shira Plateau, offering rewarding views of the mountain. Looking back, Mt. Meru can be seen rising high above Arusha town in the distance.
Distance covered: 5.4km / 3.4mi
Shira Cave (3845m) to Barranco Camp (3960m)
Shira Camp - Walking now on high moorland, the landscape changes the entire character of the trek. The route traverses the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, passing underneath the Lava Tower and the final section of the Western Breach, finally reaching camp. The day is spent at altitude (up to 4600m), but the mountaineering code of ‘walk high, sleep low’ is followed to aid the body’s acclimatization to altitude.
Distance covered: 10.8km / 6.7mi
Barranco Camp (3960m) to Karanga Camp (3963m)
Barranco Camp - The day starts by descending into the Great Barranco, a huge ravine. The route then exits steeply up the Great Barranco Wall, which divides the southeastern slopes of Kibo. It’s a climb over rock, not technical but long and tiring. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, the route heads towards the Karanga Valley. From here, there is a steep climb up from Karanga Valley to the night’s camp at Karanga Camp, set at 3963m. For those feeling strong, a mid-afternoon acclimatization trek up to around 4200m is available before descending back to camp for the night.
Distance covered: 5.5km / 3.4mi
Karanga Camp (3963) to Barafu Camp (4640m)
Barafu Camp (4640m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) & down to Millennium Camp (3790m)
